Job Description

Knowledgeable and experienced Analyst is needed at a local health insurance company in Honolulu. As the Analyst for pricing and underwriting, you will establish premium rates for new and existing groups, work strategically with different departments to propose rates, and provide analytical support for company initiatives.


This is not an entry-level position so we are looking for someone who has at least four years of underwriting, rating, or actuarial experience. Candidates should also have a Bachelor's degree and an analytical eye.


Additional Responsibilities:


Produce premium rates:


  • Calculate rates for small and large employer groups 
  • Partner with the sales team to provide appropriate information that will increase the success of renewing existing groups and enrolling new groups
  • Support the sales team on customer and broker/consultant strategy, meetings, calls, and other communications
  • Produce business reports
  • Conduct peer reviews on rate proposals and other company-wide analyses. 
  • Calculate and recommends rates for individual plans. 
  • Assists with regulatory filings
Compile annual underwriting forecast:
  • Monitor utilization and enrollment for groups
  • Determine trends or unusual variances and inform management 
  • Monitor and evaluate economic trends and forecasts and their potential impact on company revenue, margin, and/or membership
  • Prepare the annual underwriting forecast
  • Collaborate with other departments such as sales and accounting to evaluate forecast assumptions and operational changes 
  • Review and analyze budget data and discuss variances
  • Maintain forecast model including appropriate documentation
  • Continuously improves forecasting techniques
Support plan benefit strategies:
  • Calculate, compare, and make recommendations on group-specific and book of business incurred but not received (IBNR) claims analysis.
  • Assists in the analysis of existing benefits and limitations, new products, and markets 
  • Determines impact of these recommendations to individual groups
  • Conduct analyses to support company research, reporting, and initiatives
Other duties:
  • Assist with design, writing, maintenance, and production of department manuals
  • Assist the department manager with special projects
  • Other tasks as assigned


Required Education and Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, economics, statistics, finance, business administration or equivalent in education, experience or training
  • Minimum four years of progressive experience in rating, underwriting, actuarial, or related field
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Strong knowledge of programming techniques such as SQL and statistical analysis preferred
