Job Description

 

HONOLULU Magazine (www.HonoluluMagazine.com) is seeking a experienced Creative Director to lead our design team for our HONOLULU, HONOLULU Family, HONOLULU Fashion Week, and related brands. The ideal candidate will lead our award-winning design team consisting of 4 art directors, and be able to collaborate with the editorial and sales team to ensure that our multiple titles consistently appeal to the changing tastes of our readers and advertising clients we achieve our production deadline and profitability objectives. This is a full-time, regular position reporting to the Publisher.

 
Primary Job Duties:
  • Lead and supervise a team of 4 art directors, associate art directors, and design interns to fulfill the design needs of the HONOLULU brand for editorial, advertising, sales, marketing, events, and digital departments, including but not limited to: 
    • recruiting and staffing
    • providing periodic feedback on performance and conducting formal performance evaluations
    • Proactively encourage and support the professional and personal development of all design team employees via formal training and other aio programs such as Personal Development Leave
    • Proactive recognize performance that meets or exceeds expectations, and coach and manage performance that does not consistently meet expectations
  • Be the lead designer on HONOLULU covers and features, and provide assistance and leadership to other titles’ art directors on covers, pages, advertising design, etc. when needed.
  • Collaborate effectively with other departments to create top-quality editorial pages, advertising special section pages, website and newsletter design, advertising design for clients, and any/all other design needs across all titles.
  • Play a vital role in branding HONOLULU by being the “point person” for the look and feel and integrity of the brand. Ensure brand consistency across all channels.
  • Perform a “quality control” function for the brand, to ensure the highest standards of design on all publications and collateral, print and digital. 
  • Recruit, manage and develop a strong, deep pool of freelance photographers, illustrators and page designers to assist staffers in handling all design projects.
  • Collaborate with the Managing Editors to establish and manage production schedules for each brand to consistently meet the brands’ assigned deadlines
  • Develop and manage the HONOLULU Group’s departmental production budgets to consistently meet/exceed monthly expense objectives including production labor, freelancers, vendor and supply expenses
  • Collaborate with printer and digital vendors to publish content across any and all platforms.
  • Collaborate and provide assistance to art directors on other PacificBasin titles as business needs dictate.
  • Other responsibilities as the market and business dictate

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Art or Graphic Design, or equivalent professional work experience
  • Minimum 10 years of graphic design experience (monthly or bi-monthly print magazine design experience preferred)
  • Minimum 10 years of professional work experience using Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Minimum 5 years of professional work experience managing photo shoots in studio and on location
  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience
