Job Summary:

Under the general direction of the Director of Campus Operations, the Campus Operations Intern supports two short-duration projects requiring entry-level architecture and/or engineering ability. In parallel, the Campus Operations Intern will attend meetings and observe other processes related to architectural and engineering projects at the Honolulu Museum of Art.

The Honolulu Museum of Art:

Opened in 1927, the Honolulu Museum of Art is a home for art and education created for the benefit of the entire community. Founder Anna Rice Cooke envisioned a museum that would bring people together through the power of art and “the deep intuitions that are common to all.” The museum was conceived of as a place of meaningful exchange and dialogue, celebrating the diverse artistic and cultural traditions of Hawai‘i’s multi-ethnic population. From this founding intention grew the museum of today, with a world-class encyclopedic collection of more than 55,000 works of art, representing a stunning breadth of places and eras, from all corners of the globe and from the ancient past to the present day.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate architecture or engineering program. Recent graduates may also be considered.
  • Familiarity with architectural and construction drawings, including content as well as conventions for organization.
  • Proficiency with 2D AutoCAD, in particular:
  •   - Proper incorporation of reference .dwg, .pdf, and image files
  •   - Disciplined usage of layers
  •   - Proper usage of model space vs. paper space
  •   - Annotative scaling
  •   - Blocks
  •   - Fields
  • Rudimentary drafting standards
  • Ability to take direction and subsequently apply it to independent work.
  • The traits of honesty, integrity, enthusiasm, and perspective; a very strong work ethic, supported by commitment and follow-through.

Key Tasks:

  • Conduct up to two short-duration projects under the direction of the Director of Campus Operations and with assistance from the Facilities Manager, Head of Security and Safety, and their respective departments as needed:
  •     - Thoroughly review, catalog, document, and physically organize the Facilities Department’s repository of drawings for the campus. The original buildings on campus date back to the early 20th century and they have undergone numerous renovations, additions, and other modifications. The drawings repository cannot be effectively utilized without a complete review that yields identification of content, organization, appropriate disposition of duplicates and/or early revisions, identifiable labeling, user-friendly access/storage, and corresponding cataloging in a digital format.
  •     - Finalize a roughly 80% complete 2D model of the campus in .dwg format, potentially generating other CAD products that utilize the base model. The completed model will serve as a base for a broad range of applications related to space planning, documenting, and sharing building information, emergency preparedness, and future projects. Completing the model requires physical survey of spaces on campus to identify errors in the model principally related to subdivision; validation of dimensions and adjustments to assure a modest degree of accuracy will also be involved. Additionally, portions of the model must be “cleaned up” in terms of layer organization, the elimination of extraneous objects, and/or the application of uniform conventions to depict certain building features. Finally, portions of the model must be created from a combination of .pdf files and on-site study.
  • In the case of ongoing and future physical projects on campus, accompany the Director of Campus Operations, the Facilities Manager, and/or Head of Security and Safety to meetings and other activities involving architects, engineers, contractors, and/or related consultants.

Educational Outcomes:

  • Real-world exposure to how architectural and engineering services are ultimately used by the owners who fund design/construction, occupy, operate, and maintain buildings or other facilities.
  • Insight into how owners participate in, and are affected by, design/planning processes.
  • Understanding of when and how owners engage architects, engineers, and related specialists for services beyond design and initial construction.
  • Exposure to “what’s left behind” after design and construction completed.
  • Experience with CAD work and the utilization of construction drawings in a real-world setting.
