Job Description

Summary: As an Employment Counselor under the First To Work – Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (FTW TANF), you will provide counseling and provide group educational and vocational guidance to program participants.  We are looking for someone who has prior case management experience, excellent communication, can motivate and inspire individuals, and has a strong desire to help the community.  In addition, someone who has experience in work place acculturalization and job preparedness classes such as resume writing, dressing for success, budgeting, time management, stress management, and related training curriculum. 

 

Essential Duties:

  • Collects, organizes and analyzes information about individuals through records, tests, interviews and professional sources to appraise participant’s interests, aptitudes, abilities and personality characteristics for vocational planning and/or employment placements
  • Compiles and studies occupational, educational and economic information to aid participants in making and carrying out vocational and educational objectives
  • Works with other training staff and job developer to formulate a program for a smooth transition into community employment.
  • Provides case management services to participants.
  • Ability to deal effectively with difficult and on occasion, irate participants.
  • Generates payments for supportive services childcare, transportation, and other work related expenses.
  • Responsible for gathering data from caseload on a monthly and quarterly basis as it relates to agency and program policy and procedure for reporting purposes.  Verifies that data is correct and submits reports to supervisor.
  • Participates directly with the business community through business associations, personal contacts and referrals to inform the business community of the job placement services offered by the program and solicit job placement opportunities.
  • Assists participants in overcoming social, motivational, emotional and other barriers that may constitute as barriers to employment.
  • Researches and compiles occupational, educational, and economic data regarding factors that would aid participants in fulfilling vocational and/or educational objectives.
  • Participates in staff meetings, training and Job Team activities to support the quality of services being delivered at the highest standards
  • Stays abreast of new developments, methods and techniques in the field related to employability of hardest-to-serve and economically disadvantaged adults.
  • Writes individualized employment plans for participants, that include appropriate goals and objectives relative to abilities, interests, experience, assessments, financial needs and labor market trends and updates as needed.
  • Assists participants in identifying other resources to enhance their opportunities for employment within the community and makes referrals as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university is preferred and/or
  • One to two years related experience
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Familiarization with verbal de-escalation techniques and customer service
  • Proficient in computer programs required using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

 Prefer​red Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Social Work, or a related field
  • One to two years related experience working with individuals with barriers
  • Motivational interviewing and counseling experience preferred.
