POSITION SUMMARY:

 

 

 

The Kupuna Wellness Center Fitness Instructor provides direct fitness and health instruction and mentorship to program participants in accordance with Lanakila Pacific’s values and program standards; plans and implements daily program activities which will enable each participant to be active and engaged.  This position is responsible for program operations at their designated sites and to rotate to all other group dining sites to conduct scheduled fitness and health activities.  The Kupuna Wellness Center Fitness Instructor assures the quality of recreational services provided consistent with Lanakila Pacific’s mission and values.

 

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Fitness & Health Responsibilities:

 

1. Plans, organizes, directs, and supervises fitness & health programs and activities at all group dining sites.

 

2. Provides training for Kupuna Wellness Center/Group Dining Instructors in the area of fitness and health.

 

3. Assists the Kupuna Wellness Center/Group Dining Manager to plan, organize, and supervise various special projects and events associated with fitness & health programming.

 

4. Assists the Kupuna Wellness Center/Group Dining Manager in identifying speakers to educate seniors for their well-being.

 

5. Assists the Kupuna Wellness Center/Group Dining Manager with development, implementation, and maintenance of the

 

 

 

Kupuna Wellness Center/Group Dining site fitness and health activity curricula.

 

Instructor Responsibilities:

 

1. Conduct intake and initial assessment of new participants; conduct nutritional risk assessments; calculate Body Mass Index.

 

2. Conduct reassessments and update nutritional risk assessments on annual basis for all continuing participants.

 

3. Assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of the Group Dining site activity curriculum.

 

4. Provides feedback to the Kupuna Wellness Center/Group Dining Manager for the purpose of resolving program issues and/or improving the program.

 

5. Implements and maintains program activities to support a healthful and respectful environment for all participants.

 

6. Schedule, coordinate, and conduct social/recreational and exercise activities and ensure monthly provision of nutrition education, educational classes or activities (to include community speakers, service projects and public awareness).

 

7. Ensures all activities are age appropriate, meaningful and based on the participants needs and abilities.

 

8. Responsible for maintaining a professional relationship with participants.

 

9. May on arrange for transportation for participants to/from sites or to/from an activity in a commercial vehicle or a transportation service.  Use of personal vehicles to transport participants is prohibited.

 

10. Ensure accuracy and timely completion of meal orders, daily attendance and food distribution (or waste) reports, enrollment records, daily summaries, project income, incident/accident reports, etc.

 

11. Monitor volunteers in the provision of meal service to ensure requirements (including portion control, food temperature, safety, and sanitation) are being met.

 

12. Ensure that a safe and secure system for the collection and deposit of program income is followed.

 

13. Ensure that facilities are accessible and safe at all times, emergency equipment (phone, fire extinguisher, alarm) is operational and available, and repair requests are reported immediately.

 

14. Abide by established operating, contract and safety policies and procedures.

 

15. Recognize that the safety and well-being of participants and authorized visitors is the top priority and respond accordingly.

 

16. Assist with volunteer recruitment and referrals to the LMOW Volunteer Coordinator or Volunteer Assistant.

 

17. Conduct intake and initial assessments with walk-ins interested in attending the Group Dining program.

 

18. Refer participants inquiring about other supportive services to the Group Dining Outreach Worker or the Information & Assistance unit of the City/County of Honolulu, Elderly Affairs Division.

 

19 .Perform outreach duties to increase participation in underserved areas.

 

20. Participate in the annual March for Meals and other advocacy, awareness and public education activities; inform and recruit program participants; help coordinate transportation and related activities.

 

21. Monitor, control, and document the use of program supplies, equipment, dinnerware and janitorial supplies.

 

22. Demonstrate Lanakila Pacific’s values of teamwork, excellence, achievement, motivation and Lanakila in all personal interactions with others.

 

 

 

Training/Supervisory<​/p>

 

1. Assist with the training and supervision of volunteers on program requirements.

 

2. Review annually and ensure that Lanakila Pacific and LMOW Group Dining policies and procedures are implemented and followed.

 

3. Complete the NAPIS assessment/reassessment forms for all new participants and for enrolled participants annually and as needed.

 

4. Compile daily, weekly and monthly meal counts, recreational, educational, outreach, and volunteer activities for monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.

 

5. Gather information for annual surveys.

 

6. Ensure accurate and timely completion of all reports.

 

 

 

Reporting

Job Requirements

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education/Experience:

 

1 .High School Diploma or equivalent with Group Exercise Instructor certification.

 

2. Three years of experience in the group exercise field.

 

3. Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Certifications required.

 

4. Attendance and/or participation in at least twenty (20) hours of education and/or training, including six (6) hours in aging and senior-related issues annually.

 

 

 

 Preferred Experience:

 

1 .Bachelor’s degree in area of specialty, such as Health and Wellness, Fitness, Nutrition & Exercise or Gerontology.

 

2 .Experience in a community-based program working or volunteering with the elderly.

 

 

 

 Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

 

1. Planning and organizational skills.

 

2. Excellent listening skills.

 

3. Demonstrate basic computer skills in Word, Excel or other comparable programs preferred.

 

4 .Knowledgeable and effective use of community resources.

 

5. Must meet physical demand of the position.

 

6. Must have driver's license, clean driver’s abstract, and access to a properly insured vehicle.

 

7. Must have current TB Clearance (valid within one year).

 

8. Must be able to pass criminal background check.
