Job Description

Maunakea Observatories Support Services.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Maunakea Observatories Support Services (MKSS), located at Maunakea on the island of Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $3,500-$6,420/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Directly supervises First Light Bookstore staff (3.5 full-time employees) and operations. Assists the Visitor Information Station (VIS) manager in overseeing operations at the Visitor Information Station located at the 9,300 ft. elevation of Maunakea.  Responsible for the operation and management of the VIS First Light Bookstore (FLBS) and operation and expansion of the online FLBS.  The VIS and the FLBS are open every day of the week from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.  Interacts directly with the Maunakea Observatories Outreach Committee and the office of Maunakea Management (OMKM) in developing product lines to sell in the FLBS and for outreach activities. Additional duties include but are not limited to interpretive and stargazing activities, outreach events, safety education, emergency communications, website updates, disciplinary action, and assisting with road closure activities.  Assists the VIS Manager with upgrades to VIS infrastructure and equipment to improve existing programs and create new programs. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Astronomy, Business, Marketing or related field. (One to two (1-2) years of college coursework and three (3) years of formal training and experience in Astronomy, Business, Marketing or a related field may substitute for a Bachelor's Degree).  EXPERIENCE:  At least one (1) year of full-time experience in retail operations and public outreach programs.  One to three (1-3) years of supervisory experience.  Experience with a retail point of sale system and using spreadsheets.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of marketing/merchandising. Knowledge of cash handling operations (open, close, balance, reports, deposits, etc.).  Knowledge of loss control measures used to monitor cash handling operations and inventory management.  Must know how to use a point of sales system to produce financial records and reports. Knowledge of basic accounting and cash management techniques useful in retail operations.  Ability to analyze sales and inventory data, produce reports, and maintain appropriate inventory levels.  Ability to supervise, train, and oversee personnel.  Demonstrable ability to prepare concise written, grammatically correct reports.  Must be able to use creativity when developing products.  Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission on unpaved roads and ice or snow-covered pavement. Must possess clean driving abstract, and able to follow MKSS Driving Safety Policy.  Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Able to work continuously at 9,300 ft. altitude and occasionally at 14,000 ft. elevation.  Must have the ability to carry over forty-five (45) pounds.  Must be able to work a variety of days in order to supervise a seven (7) day per week operation.  Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination on an ongoing basis (which includes a substance abuse test).  POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).  

 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Astronomy, Business, Marketing, or related field.  Two to four (2-4) years of experience working with the various organizations with interests on Maunakea.  Formal training in Hawaiian studies. Understands the significance of Maunakea to the Hawaiian culture and its importance to the scientific community. Experience as a volunteer, or with volunteer programs.  Experience in tourism industry. Experience managing a retail operation very similar to the FLBS.   Experience working at high altitude, or on Maunakea.  Knowledge of RCUH Purchasing and Procurement procedures.  First Responder certification.
