Job Description

POSITION: Equipment Operator 

REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent

BASIC FUNCTIONUnder the direction of the Assistant Superintendent, this position is responsible for the safe and competent operation and care of maintenance machinery such as riding mowers, vehicles and attachments, tractors and attachments, and powered pedestrian equipment. Cares for, operates and monitors the performance of such equipment to accomplish tasks by and such as but not limited to the following:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Mows greens, fairways, tees, green collars, and approaches, surrounds, and roughs in straight lines, circles, or continuously across slopes or flats according to the Superintendent’s specifications 

  • Aerating, rolling, Verti cutting, loading, topdressing, sweeping of debris, blowing, dragging, towing, parking, and raking. 

  • Fluid checks inspects, and corrects any pre-operation deficiencies according to the equipment manual and Superintendent's directions. 

  • Reads, understands, and follows step-by-step operating procedures outlined in a machine’s Operator Manual. 

  •  Constantly evaluates equipment needs and performance and stops operation to evaluate, remedy, and/or report any discrepancies to the Head Mechanic, Assistant Superintendent, or Superintendent. 

  • Thoroughly blows then washes equipment used and fills fuel tank before parking. 

  • Ensures the machine is clean at the end of each use. 

  • Performs equipment maintenance such as air cleaner cleaning or greasing as directed. 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: 

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities of the Greenskeeper position. 

  • Monitors and controls the operation of equipment in a safe and courteous manner. 

  • Monitors and adjusts the order of operational tasks to facilitate other maintenance procedures and maximize efficiency and time management. 

  • Performs other duties as required. 

 WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work will mostly be outdoors, sometimes under the cover of a canopy and at times not. The terrain for operation will be flat, sloped, and undulating. 
  • The operator will be regularly exposed to dust, machinery exhaust, odors, and debris. 
  • Must be available for work from 5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday – Friday and from 5:00 a.m. until complete on a weekend day to be determined by Management. Additional workdays and time will be required on occasion and for holidays. 
  • The position requires regular and predictable attendance. 

 MENTAL DEMANDS: This position requires mindfulness for safety and courtesy, awareness, alertness, anticipation, cooperation, memory retention, attention to detail, taking responsibility for machine care and operation, and self-evaluation and correction. 

 PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, see, talk, smell, and hear. The employee is required to reach with arms and hands, turn to observe, climb and balance; bend, kneel, and crawl; and regularly lift 20 lbs. The employee must meet vision requirements of close, distant, peripheral and depth perception. 

 QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: The position requires speaking, reading, and understanding English; reading and understanding equipment operator manuals; good eye and hand coordination; driving manual or standard transmission; driving or walking in straight and proportionately curved lines; communicating effectively; and having minimum one year of experience on a golf maintenance staff. 

 EDUCATION: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED). 

 WORK ENVIRONMENT: An employee in this position is routinely exposed to outside weather conditions, hazards associated with golf courses like flying golf balls, and elevated noise levels.
