HSH Mental Illness Substance Abuse Specialist

Salary commensurate w/ training and experience


The primary purpose of the MISA Specialist position is to develop and provide direct services to patients with co-occurring disorders of mental illness and substance abuse.  The MISA Specialist works closely with the HSH treatment teams to identify the treatment needs of patients with regard to MISA, suggest referrals for appropriate MISA treatment, and to provide consultation on issues on substance use to the treatment teams.



Minimum Qualifications


EDUCATION:  Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in social work, psychology, public health, social science, or related field.  At the written discretion of the HSH MISA Coordinator, specialized experience in one of the above fields plus certification as a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) may be substituted for a Master’s degree.


EXPERIENCE:  At least 2 years of work experience in substance abuse treatment and in the treatment of major mental illness.  Concurrent experience in these two areas is desirable, but not required. 


Demonstrated work history of professional dedication to quality SA and MH and/or MISA services, patient care and ethical standards.


LICENSE:  Must be State of Hawaii Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC).
