HAWAIʻI ANT LAB TECHNICIAN I – ID# 225493.

(3) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Hawai‘i Ant Lab, located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MONTHLY SALARY:  $4,071/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Conducts field surveys for invasive ants and assists in identifying specimens collected as a result of surveys, as well as from samples submitted by the public and other agencies.  Collects data on efficiency and post treatment monitoring of operational plans.  Participates in ant data collection efforts and enters data into appropriate databases.  Provides comprehensive training on invasive ant management and technical assistance to partner agencies, private industry stakeholders, and community stakeholders.  Drives to and from field sites and events. Assists in other activities related to the invasive ant strategy for Hawai‘i, this includes assisting with applied research and extension activities of the Hawai‘i Ant Lab.  Assists with implementing eradication and mitigation plans.  Expected outcomes of the program include enhanced awareness of invasive ant issues and development of new and novel solutions to control the invasive species for people, industry and natural resource managers. This is a progression series job in which the employee will be expected to perform with increasing independence on progressively responsible duties. Quantity and quality of work is expected to increase as levels increase. Progression from one (1) level to the next is not dependent on time-in-grade, rather upon employee’s demonstrated abilities, competence, and operational needs.  Through experience, demonstrated competence, and operational needs, may be hired at the appropriate level.

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

 

EDUCATION

High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

EXPERIENCE

Progression job with minimum experience requirements for Level I, and combination of experience and demonstrated competence and abilities for Levels II, III. It will assume the employee to start at Level I (unless justified and qualified to start at a higher level). Progression from one (1) level to the next is not dependent on “time-in-grade”, rather upon incumbent’s demonstrated abilities, competence, and operational needs. Three to five (3-5) years of experience in natural resources, agriculture, nursery and landscaping, insect pest control, or science communication related field. (Associate’s Degree in a natural sciences or communication related field may substitute for one (1) year of experience.).

KNOWLEDGE

Good knowledge of extension and outreach methodologies, invasive species and conservation issues. Basic understanding of agriculture, nursery and landscaping, or insect pest control industry practices.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Must have good oral and written communication skills, some computer skills in word processing, spread-sheeting and basic office software. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months of hire). Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to conduct field work in remote locations under adverse conditions as needed.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

 

Understanding of invasive ant issues and control strategies in Hawai‘i.  Understanding of integrated pest management concepts.
