The Position

In view of the requirement to add progressive health and safety leadership to the company, the need has been identified to conduct a search for position of Area Safety Manager.

Reporting to the VP of Health, Environmental, Safety and Training based at the corporate head office in Irving, Texas the Area Safety Manager is accountable for the development, implementation, and direction of the organizations' H&S programs and processes in order to ensure effective a safe, healthy and productive work environment. This role will focus in the Ontario market, the overall objective is to improve safety performance by implementing a consistent company-wide strategy, identify best practices, continuous improvement initiatives and build a strong safety culture.

 

Responsibilities / Principle Job Duties

  • Obtain COR certification in Ontario and provide oversight to COR standards nationally.
  • Assist in the development of health and safety strategies and policies.
  • Monitoring of key performance indicators (KPI's) to ensure all facilities meet or exceed H&S policies, procedures and programs; as well as annual safety audits and standardized scoring methods.
  • Ensure that fleet safety programs and policies are maintained.
  • This position is responsible for ensuring that all safety legislation is adhered to and practices and policies are adopted. Plan, implement and monitor preventative measures that the company is required to follow as per the Occupational Health & Safety Act and the Construction Safety Regulations.
  • Supervise risk assessments and provide guidance on how risks could be reduced.
  • Assist management in outlining safe operational procedures that identify and remedy all relevant hazards.
  • Ensure regular site inspections to ensure that policies and procedures are being properly implemented.
  • Oversee the administration of WSIB claims in conjunction with the operations/management team.
  • Develop practical and effective methods, both preventative and remedial, of promoting effective health & safety practices.
  • Lead the safety committee meetings, as required.
  • Perform various training initiatives, i.e. Lift-truck, WHMIS, fall-arrest, and others as required.
  • Ensure that records of inspection findings are taken and that reports are prepared recommending improvements.
  • Ensure that records of incidents and accidents are kept and that statistics are produced for management as needed.
  • Keep up to date with new legislation and educate appropriate staff.
  • Liaise with officials from the Ministry of Labour to ensure the organization is compliant with mandatory regulations.
  • Represent Graff at Contractor's meetings.
  • Oversee accident investigations, produce subsequent reports and make recommendations.
  • Ensure company's compliance with environmental issues.
  • Train supervisors to facilitate the weekly safety talks to ensure the company's obligations are being fulfilled.
  • Facilitate, in conjunction with management, the company's Early and Safe Return to Work program.

 Ideal Candidate Profile

  • A minimum of 7 years' experience in Health & Safety leadership ideally in a construction, multi-site environment where progressive health and safety programs were developed and implemented.
  • In-depth experience with COR certification and auditing.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience monitoring fleet safety programs.
  • Experience working within a unionized environment preferred
  • Leadership and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills ability to influence all levels of the organization to achieve goals.
  • Strong analytical skills including troubleshooting and root cause analysis. He/she will be effective in leading teams to quickly identify issues, causes and take sustainable corrective actions.
  • Expertise in Health and Safety auditing.
  • Excellent understanding of Incident Investigation/Root Cause Analysis
  • Comprehensive understanding of legislation, regulations, theory, and case law related to Health & Safety and sound knowledge of changes and innovations in Health & Safety.
  • Good working knowledge of standard office computer technology such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other common applications.
  • University degree/ college diploma or certificate in occupational health & safety.
  • C.S.O Designation would be an asset.
