Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:


Performs defined preparatory portions of laboratory procedures under the direct supervision of licensed personnel.  Performs clerical activities, phlebotomy and/or other duties as assigned.  May perform waived, Provider Performed Microscopy Procedures (PPMP), and Point of Care Testing (POCT) as authorized by the laboratory director.

Note: Testing can only be performed by individuals eligible for Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Technologist or Specialist in the assigned/responsible laboratory discipline recognized by 42 CFR 493 (CLIA) and HAR 110.1

QUALIFICATIONS:
E​ducation/Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in a biological science, or high school diploma or equivalent and 4 years of relevant clinical laboratory experience. OR,
• Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technician program or related science, or 2 years of college and 2 years relevant clinical laboratory experience. OR,
• Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related science and successful completion of training in an approved School of Medical Technology,  or Associate degree from an accredited school of Clinical Laboratory Sciences and completion of an approved clinical laboratory internship. OR,
• Completion of 2-3 years of training in a medical technology program or completion of one year of training in a medical laboratory technician program.

TLA I:
• Two (2) years patient care or equivelent public contact experience preferred.

TLA II:
• Two (2) or more years of experience as a DLS TLA I with experience fullfilling all applicable duties in two (2) of the progression catetories: Technical, training or administrative; and solid rating on last performance appraisal and no corrective action (verbal or above) within prior year OR
• Three (3) years relevant experience as TLA with experience fulfilling all applicable duties in two (2) of the progression categories: Technical, Training or Administrative.

Skills:
Client Services, Core Laboratory, QMC Punchbowl, QMC West Oahu, North Hawaii Laboratories:
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both in verbal and written form.
• Ability to work both independently and with a team.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Data Entry: 96% accuracy at 8,000 ksph.

Microbiology:
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both in verbal and written form.
• Ability to work both independently and with a team.
• Excellent customer service skills.
Progression Requirements

1. TLA II:
Progression Requirement Details:
• Two (2) or more years of experience as a DLS TLA I with experience fulfilling all applicable duties in two (2) of the progression categories: Technical, Training or administrative; and solid rating on last performance appraisal and no corrective action (verbal or above) within prior year; OR
• Three (3) years relevant experience as TLA with experience fulfilling all applicable duties in two of the progression categories: Technical, Training or administrative

JOB DEMANDS:
Communication Demands:

• Able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
• Able to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Able to effectively communicate information to internal and external customers in informal settings such as one-on-one and small group situations.

Typical Physical Demands:
• Requires manual and finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination, corrected vision and hearing to normal range.  Distinguishes and identifies color.
• Requires standing and sitting for moderate periods of time.
• Requires ability to wear of personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to lab coats, gloves, face shields, and respiratory equipment.
• May require keying intermittently up to seven (7) hours a day.
• May require occasional lifting and carrying of supplies weighing up to thirty five (35) pounds.

Typical Working Conditions:
• Work environment includes conditions common to a hospital/laboratory environment, including working directly with potentially hazardous chemicals and/or patients with communicable diseases.  Potential for inadvertent skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials possible. 
• Generally works in an indoor, air-conditioned area.

 

Regular Full-Time Position
Must be flexible with schedule changes to meet operational needs.
