Job Description



University of Hawai‘i at Hilo.  Regular, Part-Time (80% FTE), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, Campus Suicide Prevention program, located in Hilo, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 


MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $2,764/Mon (@ 80% FTE). 


DUTIES:  Creates and implements an assessed campus suicide prevention program.  Provides overall leadership for the day-to-day program operations.  Selects and/or develops outreach, educational and prevention materials and programming.  Serves as key trainer, workshop leader, and liaison to network with on-campus, local, state, and federal resources for suicide prevention and treatment.  Recruits students, staff and faculty to train as gatekeepers.  Trains and supervises volunteers and student employees.  Adapts and develops new suicide prevention approaches designed from feedback, evaluation, and assessment.  Uses formative assessment to improve training tools, and data collection procedures.  Works with the Director of Counseling Services to utilize evidence-based approaches, and content that is consistent with the philosophy, mission, and vision of Counseling Services and the broader University.  Works closely with the Student Data Assistant to ensure that data is collected accurately and ethically.  Works with the Director of Counseling Services to ensure grant program compliance, procedures, timelines, and reporting. 


PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Mental Health Counseling, Community Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Public Health, Education, Health Education, or related field.  EXPERIENCE:  At least two (2) years of experience teaching, consulting, presenting, training, and/or working with traditional and non-traditional students.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Some knowledge of, and training in the use of, Social Sciences and/or Education assessment, and evaluation tools for individual assessment and program evaluation. Ability in typing/word processing.  Ability in Microsoft Office Suite, which includes Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.  Must be energetic and enthusiastic.  Strong oral and written communication skills.  POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).  


SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  At least two (2) years of experience in Counseling, Mental Health, and/or Student Support Programs on a University Campus.  Previous work experience and/or expertise in suicide prevention and intervention.  At least two (2) years of experience developing curriculum and teaching materials.  Previous work experience with peer-to-peer helping or mentoring programs.  Previous experience with implementation of grant-based programs.  Familiar with the UH Hilo policies and procedures.  Experience with individual assessment and program evaluation.  Experience working with people from many different cultural backgrounds.
