Job Description



Maunakea Observatories Support Services.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Maunakea Observatories Support Services (MKSS), located at Halepōhaku, on the Island of Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 




DUTIES:  Supports the Visitor Information Station (VIS) Manager in all routine First Light Bookstore duties. Responsible for daily maintenance of store, including overall upkeep and restocking of inventory.  Responsible for receiving product into inventory, matching order numbers with items received, and product quality checks. Responsible for participating in warehouse organization and maintenance; pricing and organizing back stock for greater ease in access in busier times.  Contributes to the improvements of store displays (i.e. making signs, trying new layout ideas, incorporating new products).  Interacts with visitors to Maunakea through the VIS programs. Warns visitors about the hazards encountered on Maunakea and provides advice on how to have a safe trip.  Performs housekeeping duties. 


PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  At least two (2) years of college level course-work. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent with two to four (2-4) years of demonstrated equivalent work experience relevant to the responsibilities of the position may substitute.).  EXPERIENCE:  Two to four (2-4) years of experience in a retail environment, including both customer-facing and back-office procedures.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Basic knowledge of retail operations.  Highly competent as a cashier; in depth familiarity with basic Point of Sale (POS) functions and cash controls.  Willingness to learn further back-office support duties, including entering the Research Corporation of the University of Hawai‘i (RCUH) Purchase Orders (POs) online, bringing stock into POS inventory, POS reporting, and annual inventory.  Ability to fill orders from online store and prepare for shipment.  Willingness and ability to learn how to expand online product inventory.  Possesses or able to readily acquire knowledge about Maunakea’s cultural, astronomical, geological, archeological, natural history and environmental features, and communicate these to the public.  Knowledge of computer programs (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, POS software, etc.). Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment).  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination on an ongoing basis (which includes a substance abuse test). POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).  


SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college that would be applicable to at least some of the described duties. Supervisory experience.  Experience in a retail operational in an educational setting.  Firsthand experience with Maunakea and its various resources.  Experience working at high altitudes.  Experience working within contribution and volunteer programs.  Able to speak a second language besides English.
