(2) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), located at West Hawai‘i National Historical Parks including Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park (KAHO), Puʻukoholā Heiau National Historic Site (PUHE), and Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park (PUHO), on the Island of Hawai‘i. Primary duty station is located at Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park (KAHO). Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 


MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,654/Mon. 


DUTIES:  Works in the field, as directed, to eradicate or control of invasive vegetation from the cultural landscapes of PUHE, PUHO, and KAHO and the out planting of native pili and/or other appropriate lowland dry forest species in its place as identified by the project manager and committee. Fieldwork involves reconnaissance, thorough surveys, and mechanical/chemical removal of invasive alien species in natural, urban, and suburban areas. Removal of invasive vegetation and the out-planting of pili and other appropriate lowland dry forest species around archaeological sites and features in the park. Drives project vehicles both on and off road, and handles pesticides. This is a progression series job in which the employee will be expected to perform with increasing independence on progressively responsible duties. Quantity and quality of work is expected to increase as levels increase. Progression from one (1) level to the next is not dependent on time-in-grade, rather upon employee’s demonstrated abilities, competence, and operational needs.  Through experience, demonstrated competence, and operational needs, may be hired at the appropriate level. 


PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

High School Diploma or G.E.D equivalent.

EXPERIENCE:

One to two (1-2) years of experience in field activities related to natural resources management.

KNOWLEDGE:

Good knowledge of Hawaiian biota/natural history and threats from incipient alien plant inHawai‘i. Knowledge of field activities relating to natural resources management. Knowledge of identification of common native Hawaiian plants.

ABILITIES & SKILLS:

Ability to follow a detailed work plan and assist withlogistics.Goodoralandwrittencommunicationskills. Abilityto readmapsandaerialphotographsanddocument work. Ability and experience working with small, mechanizedequipment(chainsaws,etc.).Basiccomputer skills. Must possess a valid driver’slicense(andifuseofpersonalvehicleon thejobis required,mustalsohavevalidpersonaldriver’sinsurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintainthroughoutthedurationofemployment.Mustbe able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be abletoobtainthecertificatefollowingthetrainingprovided within six (6) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS:

Ability to work long hours in the field. Ability to backpack, lift, and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and on steep, uneven, rugged terrain, navigate through dense forest, and camp overnightinremoteareas up to five (5) consecutive days. Work is primarilyoutdoors and can include remote areas with rugged terrain that must be crossed on foot. Work also takes place in residential areas. Daily exposure to adverse conditions including extreme heat/cold, heavy rainfall, and mosquitoes is common. Position requires a flexible work schedule including early morning and late night hours and occasional weekends.

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT:

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

Field experience in an active resource management program to protect ecosystems in Hawai‘i or elsewhere, especially in the control of invasive alien species. Experience using handheld GPS units and geographic information system software. Ability to make sound planning and logistical decisions in the field. Ability to identify a wide variety of native and alien plants/animals.
