POSITION NAME:  After School Care (ASC) Leader

DEPARTMENT/GRADE LEVEL:

Elementary

REPORTS TO:  Extended Learning Coordinator

EFFECTIVE DATE:  03/20/2026

CLASSIFICATION:  Non-Exempt

 

 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES ASC staff provides afternoon care and supervision for Maryknoll students in Grades K–5, ensuring safe and engaging experiences while fostering positive relationships and supporting healthy peer interactions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist in developing and implementing high‑quality programs, activities, and events for students enrolled in the After School Care (ASC)  program. Maintain the day-to-day operations while always keeping the children’s safety the highest priority. An ASC Leader is expected to have competencies in the following major areas:

    1. Supports and implements the mission/philosophy of Catholic education and the school
    2. Gives evidence of lived Gospel values
    3. Participates in building faith community

 

  1. INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS
    1. Works cooperatively with administration, colleagues, support and parish staff
    2. Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations with students and parents
    3. Dependable and timely in all responsibilities and program duties

 

  • PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
    1. Supervise and lead students during indoor and outdoor activities
    2. Ensure student safety by adhering to ASC safety guidelines and protocols
    3. Assist in developing and implementing age appropriate and inclusive activities
    4. Maintain daily ASC program compliance, including homework support, recreational and creative activities, leadership development, and health, life, education, and career skills.
    5. Document incident/accident reports and behavioral concerns when needed
    6. Engage with parents as needed to address student concerns
    7. Help maintain clean, organized Extended Learning and ASC spaced
    8. Provide support to the coordinator and/or on-duty administrator as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year experience supervising school-age children or working in a childcare program. College degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience supervising school-age children or working in a childcare program preferred. Candidates aged 15–17 years of age with at least six (6) months experience supervising school-age children or working in a childcare program may apply, provided they obtain the necessary State of Hawai‘i and parental authorization.

 

SKILLS

  1. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  2. Ability to remain calm, organized and adaptable in stressful situations.
  3. Group leadership skills, including an understanding of group dynamics.
  4. Ability to successfully pass a background check (including fingerprints) upon official offer and acceptance of a position with Maryknoll School
  5. First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, talk, reach, sit, hear, handle, and perform repetitive motions of the hands/wrists.  After School Care Leaders must be able to stand and/or sit for extended periods.  May need to climb stairs and lift, carry, push and/or pull items up to 25 pounds.  Must be able to respond effectively to and lead the group in emergency situations.

 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is conducted in a school setting, indoors and outdoors. Is fast paced work, with constant interruptions. Employees are occasionally required to attend evening/weekend meetings/trainings and may participate in other special events.
