Job Description

The Assistant Pet Kokua Resource Center (PKRC) Manager partners with the Pet Kokua Resource Center Manager to lead daily operations, support staff and volunteers, and ensure exceptional customer service for people and animals. This role oversees PKRC programs and services, supports animal intake and movement, promotes surrender prevention and return-to-home efforts, and helps create a compassionate, efficient, and welcoming experience for every community member. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/FUNCTIONS: 


Leadership & Team Development 

  • Support the daily leadership of the Pet Kokua Resource Center team and volunteers. 
  • Assist with hiring, onboarding, training, coaching, scheduling, and performance management. 
  • Foster a collaborative, respectful, and solutions-focused team culture. 
  • Partner with the PKRC Manager to communicate organizational priorities and departmental goals. 

Customer Experience 

  • Ensure compassionate, high-quality service for community members accessing PKRC programs and Hawaiian Humane services. 
  • Assist with escalated customer concerns using empathy, professionalism, and sound judgment. 
  • Support services including animal admissions, surrender prevention, lost and found assistance, adoption follow-up, foster appointments, and transfer coordination. 

Program & Operations 

  • Support the implementation and continuous improvement of PKRC programs, policies, and standard operating procedures. 
  • Assist with initiatives that improve outcomes, including return-to-home efforts, finder foster programs, spay/neuter return programs, and data collection. 
  • Monitor daily operations to ensure efficient workflow and consistent service delivery. 

Animal Intake & Care 

  • Oversee daily animal admissions, owner relinquishments, and stray intake. 
  • Safely handle and restrain animals while maintaining humane standards of care. 
  • Administer vaccines, microchips, and preventive medications as trained. 
  • Conduct intake evaluations and identify medical or behavioral concerns requiring immediate attention. 
  • Coordinate animal movement with other departments to support timely care and placement. 
  • Facilitate owner-requested end-of-life services in partnership with the vet services team 

Lost & Found Services 

  • Lead efforts to reunite lost pets with their owners. 
  • Maintain accurate records and update photographs and information within the shelter database. 
  • Collaborate with staff and community members to maximize reunification opportunities. 

Facility & Administrative Responsibilities 

  • Help maintain a clean, safe, organized, and welcoming Pet Kokua Resource Center. 
  • Monitor departmental supplies and assist with inventory and ordering. 
  • Process daily financial transactions, including cash handling and reconciliation. 
  • Ensure donations received through the PKRC are routed appropriately. 

OTHER DUTIES/FUNCTIONS: 

  • Operations Support. Works with other departments within the organization to resolve issues of mutual concern and improve operations.  
  • Other Duties as Assigned. May include organization-wide support as needed, including but not limited to participation in events, serving as spokesperson, fundraising, covering other operational departments, and Hawaiian Humane’s role as a first responder to disasters. 

JOB CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Environment: Indoors and outdoors as needed. 
  • Equipment Use: Computer, database, and telephone systems. Use of all sheltering related animal equipment including tools for containing animals humanely, safely, and securely. Shelter related medical equipment and tools for administering vaccines humanely and safely. Use of Hawaiian Humane Vehicles.  
  • Hours: Based on operational requirements. Shift times are scheduled to support organizational needs and may include evenings, weekends, and holidays. 

MENTAL, PHYSICAL AND COMMUNICATION DEMANDS: 

  • Must be able to maintain professionalism, composure, and compassion in emotionally charged situations and able to resolve conflicts effectively. 
  • Must be able to handle and restrain animals of various sizes, weights, and temperaments in a caring, safe, and respectful manner. Subject to animal bites or scratches.  
  • Work performed in high noise level areas. Exposure to cleaning solutions, fumes, dust, animal dander and bodily fluids.  
  • Physical efforts require constant bending, stooping, standing, climbing stairs, and walking. Frequent lifting of animals and objects with or without reasonable accommodation.  
  • Perform shelter opening and closing duties as needed.  
  • Perform euthanasia and related tasks. 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Skills/Knowledge: Excellent customer service skills including verbal, written, and computer skills. Must be able to competently perform cash, computer, and paperwork transactions. Must be willing to drive company vehicles including animal transport trucks. Must pass a driving background check with a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record according to organizational policy.  
  • Education/Training: High school diploma or equivalent.  
  • Experience: Two years of customer service experience required. Minimum of one year of supervisory/leadership experience is preferred. Minimum of one year of animal handling experience preferred.
