Job Description

Job Summary:
Under the general direction of the Shangri La Tour Manager, the Driver is responsible for the operation and maintenance of a 25 passenger mini-bus that transports passengers safely from the Honolulu Museum of Art to Shangri La, the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art.  This is an on-call position. 

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
W​ork Hours: On-Call

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma, or equivalent.
  • Must posses a CDL C driver’s license, passenger endorsement.
  • Acceptable driving abstact.
  • Must demonstrate broad knowledge of Hawaii state traffic laws, DOT regulations, company procedures and safety protocol.
  • Must pass the post-offer drug and physical test.
  • Excellent attendance, attitude and punctuality is mandatory.
  • Must have good reading, verbal and written communication skills with the ability to give and receive detailed information/instructions; ability to comprehend written materials.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse audience. 
  • Must work in a manner that demonstrates safety is a priority.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Two years of prior experience driving a 25 passenger bus.
  • Understanding of Honolulu Museum of Art’s established identity and dedication to advancing it.
  • Able to accept responsibility and take direction and work cooperatively with the Shangri La Tour Manager, Tour Guides and Shangri La Security staff.
  • Intelligent self-starter who is committed to the museum’s mission.
  • The traits of honesty, integrity, enthusiasm, and perspective; a very strong work ethic, supported by commitment and follow-through. 
Essential Duties:
  • Loads passengers at the Honolulu Museum of Art in designated area and transports them safely to the designated unloading area at Shangri La. Waits at Shangri La for the duration of the tour, reloads the passengers and transports them safely back to the Honolulu Museum of Art.
  • The Driver will load and unload passengers only at the museum and Shangri La. No extra pickups or drop offs are permitted under any circumstances.
  • Know and comply with all safety check expirations and service expiration dates.
  • Follow a planned route according to a time schedule.
  • Account for all passengers before leaving a location.
  • Compliance with all state traffic laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Prepare pre/post bus inspection reports.
  • Responsible for maintaining the condition of the bus, all required equipment and all vehicle documentation.
  • Responsible for keeping the mini-bus clean (inside and outside) and fueled.
  • Checks the mini-bus after each tour for lost items and turns items over to the Shangri La Tour Manager.
  • Locks and secures bus at the end of the day.
  • Complies with all posted speed limits established by law.
  • Obeys all parking laws. The driver shall not park on private property except as permitted and instructed by the Shangri La Tour Manager.
  • Drive other routes as requested by the Shangri La Tour Manager or the Director.
Traits and characteristics:
Must be bright, diplomatic, analytical, of the highest integrity, and possess sound judgement and a sense of humor and humility.
 
Working Conditions and Atmosphere:
The Driver works with minimum supervision. The Driver will frequently drive in heavy traffic and must be able to remain calm in stressful situations. The Driver will also be asked to cooperate and work with Security Staff from the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art.
