Job Description



John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM). Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), Center for Cardiovascular Research (CCR), located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.




DUTIES:  Prepares reagents, tags animals, performs genotyping by polymerase chain reactions (PCR), and records results.  Performs mouse colony maintenance which involves use of Tamoxifen. Performs lab procedures using micropipettes, centrifuges, thermal cyclers, and microscopes. Orders reagents and maintains lab inventories in communication with other lab personnel.  Receives supplies and communications. Maintains cleanliness and safety conditions in lab. Maintains lab safety logs and ensures general safety protocol is followed. 




At least two (2) undergraduate courses in chemistry, biology, or molecular biology.


At least one (1) year of science lab experience, either professionally or through college level lab courses. Includes experience with dilutions, pipetting, chemical safety, and centrifugation.


Strong knowledge of chemistry, biochemistry, biology, and math. Familiarity with basic lab instrumentation and technique.


Ability to perform manual pipetting, calculations relating to dilutions, and concentration calculations.  Ability to use Microsoft Office, or similar software and Apple computers. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete the JABSOM Laboratory Safety Training within one (1) month from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.  Must be able to complete the UH Title IX training within twelve (12) months from date of hire.


Must have adequate manual dexterity and vision to perform lab work.  Ability to work with mice. Must not have allergies to rodents or other allergens found in the laboratory animal environment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to enroll in the Occupational Health and Safety program, which includes completing a health history questionnaire and obtaining medical clearance to work with animals in a vivarium.
