CCR RESEARCH/LAB TECHNICIAN – ID# 221081.​ 

 

John A. Burns School of Medicine.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) Center for Cardiovascular Research (CCR), located at the Biosciences Research Building in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $2,571/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Designs, performs, collects data, and analyzes molecular and cell biology experiments, including but not limited to: DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), RNA (ribonucleic acid), and protein extraction, quantification, and species and sequence analysis; PCR (polymerase chain reaction), RT-qPCR (real-time polymerase chain reaction), and gene cloning techniques. Creates and maintains tissue culture of human and animal cell lines or primary cells, bacteria and virus, and their uses in research projects. Designs, performs, collects data and analyzes experiments in biochemistry, immunohisto- and cytochemistry, and flow cytometry. Performs tissue and cell imaging analysis using microscopy techniques, such as confocal and fluorescent microscopy, live-cell imaging. Performs experiments in research projects using animals or patient  biopsies. Collects and processes fresh, frozen, or fixed tissues. Supports and assists in managing the regulatory and certification processes and ensures compliance, this includes training new laboratory members. Prepares and manages animal protocols and laboratory safety procedures. Prepares, optimizes, and executes experiment protocols. Analyzes data, generates and presents project summaries and reports. Write manuscripts and prepare for research grants applications and other laboratory activities. Assists with animal colony management, animal use, and care for experiments. Assists with managing and overseeing the work of student research assistants and laboratory volunteers. Provides support for laboratory operations (e.g., inventory maintenance, procurement, housekeeping, autoclave, and preparation of solutions). 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in a Biomedical Sciences related field (e.g., Cell/Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Physiology, Pathology, Veterinary Science, Bioengineering).  EXPERIENCE:  One to three (1-3) years of experience in a biomedical research lab.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Thorough understanding of general cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, and physiology. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to keep accurate notes and records. Ability to assist with research support. Proficient in using spreadsheet and other recording, presenting, office processing software, statistics, literature search, automatic imaging, and sequencing analyses. Ability to independently perform lab work. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to complete the UH Laboratory Safety training within two (2) weeks from date of hire. Must be able to complete the Environmental & Health Safety Office (EHSO) Hazardous Waste Generator training within two (2) weeks from date of hire. Must be able to complete the Office of Research Compliance (ORC) General Biosafety training within one (1) month from date of hire. Must be able to complete the UH Title IX training within thirty (30) months from date of hire.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to work with mice. Must not have obvious allergies to rodents or other allergens found in the laboratory animal environment. Must be able to lift laboratory equipment up to twenty-five (25) pounds unassisted. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to enroll in the Occupational Health and Safety program, which includes completing a health history questionnaire and obtaining medical clearance to work with animals in a vivarium.POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).  

 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Basic understanding and two to four (2-4) years of research experiences in interdisciplinary aspects of cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, pathophysiology, and small animal studies, including but not limited to: isolation and culture of cardiomyocytes or other primary cells and cell lines, and bacteria or adenovirus/lentivirus; gene cloning; protein/DNA/ RNA analysis; immunohisto- and cyto-chemistry; flow cytometry; histology; microscopy and imaging techniques; high-throughput/automatic image analyses. Applicable knowledge or research experience in cardiovascular diseases or regenerative biomedicine, genomics or epigenetics, and sequencing or bioinformatics analyses. Applicable knowledge or research experience in material bioengineering, nanopatterning, or other fabrication. Highly motivated, energetic, and detail-oriented. Ability to work collaboratively and troubleshoot under guidance and supervision. Track records in publication or presentation.
