Position Overview

Kupu’s Commercial and Food Truck Driver is responsible for the safe transportation, positioning, and relocation of Kupu's mobile food truck to designated locations on Oʻahu. This position is utilized on an as-needed basis and may work only a few hours per assignment, depending on organizational needs. The Commercial and Food Truck Driver ensures the vehicle is operated safely, complies with all federal, state, local traffic regulations, and Kupu policies, procedures, and established practices. The Commercial and Food Truck Driver completes pre- and post-trip inspections to identify any maintenance or safety concerns.

This position serves as an ambassador of Kupu by demonstrating aloha, professionalism, safe driving practices, and a commitment to protecting Kupu’s reputation, organizational assets and the public.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Organizational Responsibilities

• Conduct oneself with aloha and drive Kupu’s culture

Vehicle Operations

• Safely operate and transport the organization's food truck between designated locations
• Perform vehicle relocation assignments as requested, which may include movement to events, maintenance facilities, storage locations, or other approved destinations
• Park and position the vehicle in accordance with site requirements and applicable safety standards
• Comply with all federal, state, county, and organizational driving policies

Vehicle Inspection & Safety

• Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections
• Verify that lights, brakes, tires, mirrors, fluids, and safety equipment are in proper working order before operating the vehicle
• Immediately report mechanical issues, accidents, damage, or safety concerns
• Maintain cleanliness and security of the vehicle while in use

Driving Requirements

• Maintain a valid driver's license appropriate for the vehicle being operated throughout employment
• Maintain an acceptable driving record that meets Kupu's vehicle insurance requirements
• Notify the supervisor immediately of any change in driving status, license restrictions, citations that may affect insurability, accidents while operating any vehicle for organizational business, or suspension/revocation of driving privileges
• Successfully complete Kupu's driver authorization process prior to operating organizational vehicles
• Comply with all organizational vehicle safety policies and applicable federal, state, and local transportation regulations at all times

Documentation

• Complete required trip logs, inspection reports, mileage records, and other documentation as requested 
• Report fuel usage and maintenance concerns promptly

Coordination

• Coordinate vehicle pickup and delivery schedules with Operations staff
• Communicate arrival, delays, or unexpected issues in a timely manner
• Assist with coordinating vehicle servicing appointments when requested

Other duties

• Provide limited assistance with preparing the food truck for transport or securing equipment before movement
• Perform other related duties consistent with the purpose of the position as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Possess a valid Hawaiʻi driver's license appropriate for the vehicle being operated
• Possess a valid Commercial Driver License (CDL), if required based on the vehicle classification and applicable law(s)
• Clean driving record and ability to meet Kupu's driving abstract requirements
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience operating large commercial vehicles, box trucks, buses, RVs, food trucks, or similar vehicles
• Ability to safely maneuver large vehicles in urban environments, parking lots, and confined spaces
• Commitment to safe driving practices
• Strong time management skills
• Ability to work with limited supervision
• Ability to work an on-call schedule with advance notice whenever possible
• Successfully meet Kupu's criminal history background requirements

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience operating mobile food trucks or specialty commercial vehicles
• Knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations applicable to commercial vehicle operation
• Experience completing vehicle inspections and maintenance documentation
• Familiarity with Oʻahu roadways and event venues
• Basic mechanical aptitude for identifying vehicle concerns
• Current First Aid and CPR certification

Physical Requirements                                               

Due to the nature of Kupu's operations, the physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

• Ability to safely operate a large commercial vehicle or food truck for extended periods of time
• Ability to remain seated while driving for prolonged periods, which may exceed two (2) hours at a time depending on travel requirements
• Ability to enter and exit the vehicle cab multiple times throughout the workday using steps and handholds
• Ability to frequently use hands and fingers to operate vehicle controls, steering wheel, dashboard controls, gear selectors, communication devices, and other equipment
• Ability to climb into and out of the vehicle safely using three points of contact
• Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, squat, reach, twist, and climb while conducting vehicle inspections and securing equipment
• Ability to walk on uneven terrain, paved surfaces, gravel, grass, loading areas, parking lots, and event locations
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods while inspecting, positioning, or preparing the vehicle
• Ability to frequently reach overhead and below waist level during inspections or while securing equipment
• Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull materials, supplies, hoses, wheel chocks, safety cones, or other equipment weighing up to 50 pounds independently and occasionally up to 75 pounds with assistance or appropriate equipment
• Ability to push or pull carts, equipment, or supplies as needed for vehicle staging or event support
• Ability to perform repetitive motions involving the hands, wrists, arms, shoulders, and feet while operating commercial vehicle controls
• Ability to maintain sufficient balance, coordination, and mobility to safely navigate steps, ramps, and loading areas

Vision Requirements

• Ability to meet all vision requirements necessary to legally operate the assigned vehicle
• Ability to distinguish colors for traffic signals, warning indicators, and safety markings
• Ability to maintain peripheral vision and depth perception necessary for safe vehicle operation
• Ability to accurately read maps, GPS devices, inspection reports, vehicle gauges, dashboards, and work orders

Hearing and Communication

• Ability to hear horns, sirens, backup alarms, warning signals, and surrounding traffic while operating the vehicle
• Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, vendors, event staff, and members of the public in person, by phone, and via radio or other communication devices

Environmental Conditions - This position regularly works in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments, including exposure to:

• Heat, humidity, rain, wind, and other changing weather conditions common in Hawaiʻi
• Vehicle exhaust, fuel odors, dust, dirt, and road debris
• Loud noise from traffic, construction, generators, and event activities
• Busy roadways, parking lots, loading zones, and event venues
• Early morning, evening, weekend, and holiday work as needed

Cognitive and Safety Requirements

• Ability to maintain constant situational awareness while operating a large commercial vehicle
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and make timely decisions in changing traffic and roadway conditions
• Ability to maintain concentration for extended periods while driving
• Ability to safely respond to emergency situations or unexpected road conditions
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, organizational policies, and all applicable traffic laws and safety regulations
• Ability to accurately complete required inspection reports, mileage logs, and other documentation
