(2) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (CIMAR), located in the Marine Sciences Building at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa (UHM). Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $5,000 - $6,000/Mon.
DUTIES: Analyzes video to extract data on the identification, abundance and sizes of animals found in deep sea communities. Merges these data with conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) and tracking data. Participates in all aspects of preparing and submitting these data for inclusion in national databases, such as the National Deep Sea Coral Database. Uses complex customcode, database products, and software tools to populate elements and fields in the most efficient manner for the project that will be submitted for use by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) agencies. Assists with updating online deep sea animal guides with new images of animals that may be encountered during video annotation. Verifies data is accurate and complete. Identifies inconsistent data and outliers, and tracks missing data. Participates in cruises at sea, assisting in the identification of deep sea animals.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Zoology, Biology, Oceanography, or a related field.
EXPERIENCE
One to three (1-3) years of experience annotating and extracting data from underwater video, annotating, extracting, and querying knowledge based animal databases, and developing metadata for biological datasets. .
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge and experience in biology and identification of deep water animals from ROV or submersible video. Proficient working within a networked computer environment. Efficiency working within national database environments.
ABILITIES & SKILLS
Ability to use standard computer software used in science such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, e-mail, and internet access programs. Demonstrated ability to learn and apply new database standards to select data sets. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially in an academic setting. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to work aboard vessels for up to six (6) weeks during ROV cruises. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to obtain medical clearance for embarking/working on research vessels or other appropriate vessels, which may include providing proof of required immunizations or obtaining the necessary immunizations as required by vessel, and maintain throughout duration of employment.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of deep-sea coral or sponge identification and taxonomy. Experience working with Darwin Core data standards. Knowledge and experience ingesting biological data sets in Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS) and other national/regional tools. Ability to code effectively and efficiently. Ability to troubleshoot coding and software issues. Geographic Information System (GIS) computer experience.
