Job Description



John A. Burns School of Medicine.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the John A. Burns School of Medicine, Department of Cell & Molecular Biology (CMB), located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 




DUTIES:  Performs a variety of laboratory experiments in cell and molecular biology including cell culture, transfection, molecular cloning, western blot analyses of protein samples, protein and nucleic acid extraction from tissues, fluorescence microscopy, data entry, and other technical duties. 


PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in a Biological Science field.  EXPERIENCE:  One to three (1-3) years of experience working in a research laboratory performing cell and molecular biological procedures.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Working knowledge of general principles of biological and biochemical subjects required. Knowledge of principles of microscopy. Proficient knowledge and skills of common computer software for word processing (e.g. Microsoft Word) and database/spreadsheet (e.g. Excel).  Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing. Ability to organize experimental design and acquired data in laboratory notebooks. Ability to organize PowerPoint presentations and articulate accomplishments to members of the research team, as well as outside scientists.  Post Offer/Employment Conditions:  Must complete the University of Hawai‘i (UH) Laboratory Safety Training within one (1) month from date of hire.  Must be able to complete the Office of Research Compliance (ORC) General Biosafety training within one (1) month from date of hire.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must be able to lift up to twenty (20) pounds.  Must be able to provide own transportation to and from work. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Laboratory research experience using cell culture, fluorescence microscopy, immunoblot and immunocytochemical analysis, and other cell and molecular biology skills.
