COLLEGE PLANNING ADVISOR – ID# 19063.<​/strong> 

 

Windward Community College.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Windward Community College, Educational Talent Search Program, located on Oahu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MONTHLY SALARY:  Salary commensurate with qualifications. 

 

DUTIES:  Recruits participants and provides grade specific career exploration and college planning activities for disadvantaged youth at assigned public schools.  Each advisor will be assigned a caseload of 300–350 students ranging from grades six to twelve (6–12) and must be able to manage records, time, activities and schedules. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Education, Counseling/Guidance, Psychology, Social Work or related field.  EXPERIENCE:  Two to four (2-4) years of relevant professional experience typically acquired by working in or with a middle-secondary school, postsecondary institution, or community-based organization that serves disadvantaged populations.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of student services including college admissions, financial aid, counseling/academic advising, and other student retention services; postsecondary educational systems; and careers and education/training needed to successfully reach career goals.  Working knowledge of Hawai‘i Department of Education system and standards, preferred.  Familiar with socio-economic issues and economic differences, as well as individual and group dynamics that affect educational progress.  Functional knowledge of principles, practices, and guidance techniques associated with the scope of duties.  Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software.  Able to advise students individually and in groups.  Able to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in educational settings.  Able to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by students.  Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes, and resolve the full range of problems that may commonly occur in working with disadvantaged youth.  Able to collect and document program services and federal reporting outcomes.  Able to operate a personal computer.  Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.  Post Offer/Employment Condition:Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).  

 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Education, Counseling, Guidance, Psychology, Social Work or closely related field and at least three (3) years of relevant professional experience typically acquired by working with or in a TRIO program, secondary school, postsecondary institution or community-based organization.  Excellent public speaking and communications skills.  Experiences in classroom management, coaching and teaching.
