Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Circulation Marketing Manager to lead and grow the subscription programs for three leading publications—Hawaii Business and Honolulu Magazine. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and execution of subscription marketing strategies across print and digital formats, including newsletters, and will manage day-to-day circulation operations via the DarwinCX system. 

This role requires a data-driven, customer-focused marketer with strong technical skills and a deep understanding of subscription acquisition, retention, and engagement strategies. 

 

Key Responsibilities: 

Subscription Strategy & Execution 

  • Develop and implement comprehensive subscription marketing plans to drive acquisition, conversion, and retention across print and digital platforms for all three magazine brands. 
  • Expand and optimize newsletter subscription programs, including onboarding journeys, engagement strategies, and cross-promotion tactics. 
  • Collaborate with editorial, digital, events and design teams to create compelling subscriber offers, landing pages, and campaigns. 
  • Lead pricing strategies, promotional testing, and A/B tests to optimize customer lifetime value and acquisition cost. 

Platform & Operations Management 

  • Serve as the in-house expert and administrator for the DarwinCX platform: 
  • Manage customer data, subscription offers, and user flows. 
  • Monitor and maintain subscription fulfillment processes, integrations, and troubleshooting. 
  • Ensure clean data collection, customer tagging, and tracking across all subscriber touchpoints. 

Performance Tracking & Optimization 

  • Analyze performance data and KPIs across all subscription programs (e.g., churn rates, open rates, conversion rates, renewal rates). 
  • Produce monthly and quarterly reporting dashboards to share insights and recommendations. 
  • Identify and test new growth channels and customer acquisition sources (email, social, SEM, partnerships, events, etc.). 

Audience Development & Retention 

  • Develop lifecycle marketing programs to boost subscriber retention and reduce churn. 
  • Lead customer communication strategies including renewal notices, billing messages, and onboarding sequences. 
  • Leverage CRM and customer journey data to build and manage targeted campaigns and segmented lists. 

Collaboration & Leadership 

  • Work closely with brand, editorial, product, and sales teams to ensure alignment between audience goals and content/product strategies. 
  • Coordinate with fulfillment and customer service partners to ensure timely delivery and high-quality service. 

 

Qualifications: 

  • 3–5 years of experience in subscription marketing, circulation management, or audience development—preferably in publishing/media. 
  • Hands-on experience with DarwinCX or similar subscription/customer experience platforms. 
  • Strong understanding of email marketing, lifecycle campaigns, and subscriber retention strategies. 
  • Proficient in CRM, email service providers, analytics tools (Google Analytics, Looker, etc.), and A/B testing platforms. 
  • Excellent data analysis skills and ability to translate insights into action. 
  • Strong project management, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills. 
  • Experience with newsletter programs and audience growth strategies a major plus. 

 

Preferred Skills: 

  • Experience working with magazine publishers or media companies. 
  • Familiarity with subscription billing models and fulfillment logistics. 
  • Working knowledge of HTML/CSS for email or landing page edits (not required, but a plus). 
  • Creative thinker with a strong customer-first mindset.
