Job Description
The Communications Specialist role at ʻŌlelo Community Media is responsible for transforming everyday community moments into compelling stories that inspire connection and engagement. This position requires a creative, self‑motivated storyteller who brings fresh ideas, takes initiative, and thinks beyond standard templates while contributing to a collaborative, mission‑driven team.
The ideal candidate understands current social media trends, communicates effectively across digital platforms, and works closely with multiple departments to highlight ʻŌlelo’s community impact. This role blends creativity, strategy, and teamwork to elevate ʻŌlelo’s presence and amplify the voices of the communities it serves.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONISIBILITIES:
Be a Driver, Not Just a Doer
- Proactively identify stories, trends, and opportunities to elevate ‘Ōlelo’s voice across social media and digital platforms.
- Pitch and execute creative content ideas, from quick social videos to campaign concepts, without needing constant direction.
- Take ownership of projects while staying aligned with organizational goals and brand values.
Lead the Social Media Charge
- Manage day-to-day content creation, scheduling, and engagement across ‘Ōlelo’s social platforms.
- Experiment with formats (reels, short-form video, behind-the-scenes content, creator highlights) to grow reach and connection.
- Monitor performance, spot what’s working, and adjust strategy accordingly.
Collaborate & Connect
- Work closely with staff, producers, instructors, and community members to surface stories and amplify diverse voices.
- Translate internal updates and program milestones into engaging external communications.
- Support internal communications by keeping staff informed and connected.
Tell Stories That Matter
- Create compelling written, visual, and short-form video content that reflects ‘Ōlelo’s mission and community impact.
- Help shape a consistent, authentic voice that feels human, inclusive, and rooted in Hawaiʻi.
- Ensure messaging is clear, accessible, and culturally respectful.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 2–3 years of professional experience in communications, social media management, marketing, digital storytelling, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated ability to manage organizational or brand social media accounts, including content creation, scheduling, and community engagement.
- Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to adjust tone, style, and format for different audiences and platforms.
- Experience producing original digital content such as graphics, short-form videos, or written posts.
- Basic proficiency with analytics tools (e.g., platform insights, engagement reporting) and understanding of audience behavior.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 3–5 years of relevant professional experience, ideally in a nonprofit, media, communications, or community-focused organization.
- Experience working in a newsroom, media production team, or fast-paced content environment.
- Skills in video production, photography, graphic design, or multimedia editing using tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or mobile editing apps.
- Familiarity with Hawaiʻi’s communities, cultures, local issues, and media landscape.
- Experience using email marketing platforms (e.g. Mailchimp, Constant Contact) and content management systems.
- Ability to develop content that reflects cultural sensitivity, inclusivity, and community voice.
