EHW FIELD PROJECT ASSISTANT – ID# 226004.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), and East Hawai‘i Wildlife/Division of Forestry and Wildlife (EHW/DOFAW) located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,654/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Assists with building, inspecting, and maintaining fences.Monitors and controls alien plants, feral pigs,sheep,goatsandpredatorsattheEastHawai‘iWildlifemanagement Areas. Conducts ungulate (e.g., feral pigs, feral and mouflon sheep, and other ungulatesasnecessary)controlandmonitoringactivitiesintheEHWManagement Area. Deploys game cameras and bait stations to facilitate ungulate capture.Inputs data into GPS equipment and computer database.  Conducts alien and native plant monitoring and invasive plant controlintheEHWManagementArea.Controlsalienplantsusingmechanicaland chemical techniques.Establishes and monitors transects to evaluate forest recovery and plant distribution.Performs assigned duties related to habitat protection, including site preparation, and seed collection. Performsplantinventory, feral goat and sheep census, assists with tracking. Requires frequent campingforfourtofive(4-5)daysaweek,uptothree(3)weekspermonth.Drives projectvehiclestoworksites.Travelsandworksinandaroundhelicopters.Works extended, irregular hours. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

 

EDUCATION

HighSchoolDiplomaorG.E.D.equivalent.

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years of field experience surveying plant andanimalpopulationsandworkinremotesettings.

KNOWLEDGE

Basic knowledgeoffloraandfauna,andthreatsfromalienspecies. Working knowledge of the principles of ecology and wildlife biology.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Abilitytonavigateusingacompass,map,andGlobal Positioning System (GPS) hand-held units.Ability to apply herbicides. Abilitytoworkindependently.Abilitytoinspectandrepairfences.Abilityto use a computer to record technical field data, analyze field data using database and spreadsheet programs, and prepare draft reports.Must possessavaliddriver’slicense(andifuseofpersonalvehicleonthejobis required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’sNo-FaultDriver’sInsurance)andmaintainthroughouttheduration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within twelve (12) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout durationofemployment.Mustbeabletocompletechainsawtrainingwithin twelve(12)monthsoffromdateofhire.Must complete theonlineHazardCommunicationtrainingimmediatelyafterhireornolater than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within six (6) months from date of hire. Must pass twelve (12) month probationary period and receive minimum satisfactory performance evaluation prior to approval of air guns usage. Must obtain and maintain National Rifle Association or National Park Service firearms training (or other comparable training) and State of Hawai‘i/DLNR Hunter Education Program firearms certification and maintain throughout duration of employment. As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certifying agency or as required by State and Federal laws. Failure to pass the air gun qualification requirements may be grounds for disqualification of part or all of the job duties.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Abilityto conductfieldwork indense vegetation or over lava substrate under difficult conditions (e.g.,heat, rain, cold temperatures,poorfooting).Abilityto hike and camp inremote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions for up to five (5) consecutivedays,uptothree(3)weekspermonth.Abilitytobackpack,lift, and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted.

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

 

College coursework in biology, ecology, wildlife management, botany, or related field.Experienceinhuntingferalanimals.Experienceusingradiotelemetry,and GlobalInformationSystem(GIS).Experienceconstructing,repairingorinspecting enclosurefencing.Knowledge of endangered fauna andflora species in Hawai‘i. Familiarity with the East Hawai‘i Wildlife/Division of Forestry and Wildlife (EHW/DOFAW).
