(2) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), and East Hawai‘i Wildlife/Division of Forestry and Wildlife (EHW/DOFAW) located in Hilo, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 


MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,500/Mon. 


DUTIES:  Builds, inspects, and maintains fences.Monitors and controls alien plants, feral pigs,Mouflonsheep,goatsandpredatorsattheE​astHawai‘iWildlifemanagement Areas. Conducts ungulate (e.g., feral pigs, feral and mouflon sheep, and other ungulatesasnecessary)controlandmonitoring​activitiesintheEHWManagement Area. Tracks animals using radio telemetry. Deploys game cameras and bait stations to facilitate ungulate capture.Keepsdetailed records of activities, inputs data, and provides summaries and analysis of field data on status of ungulate control program. Conducts alien and native plant monitoring and invasive plant controlintheEHWManagementArea.Controlsali​enplantsusingmechanicaland chemical techniques.Establishes and monitors transects to evaluate forest recovery and plant distribution.Collects and analyzes technical field data. Performs duties related to habitat restoration and protection, including site preparation, seed collection and processing, planting and monitoring.Conducts wildlifehabitatanalysisclassificationforv​ariouswildlife.Performsplantinventory, forest bird survey, environmental education, feral goat and sheep census, and ordering supplies and materials for field projects as needed. Requires frequent campingforfourtofive(4-5)daysaweek,uptoth​ree(3)weekspermonth.Drives projectvehiclestoworksites.Travelsandwork​sinandaroundhelicopters.Works extended, irregular hours. 


PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. 

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years of field experience surveying plant andanimalpopulationsandworkinremotesettin​gs. (At least one (1) year of college-level coursework from an accredited college or university in a related discipline (e.g., biology, zoology, or related natural science) may substitute for experience.).

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledgeoffloraandfauna,andthreatsfro​malienspecies. Working knowledge of the principles of ecology and wildlife biology.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Abilitytonavigateusingacompass,map,and​Global Positioning System (GPS) hand-held units.Ability to apply herbicides. Abilitytoworkindependently.Abilitytoinspe​ctandrepairfences.Abilityto use a computer to record technical field data, analyze field data using database and spreadsheet programs, and prepare draft reports.Must possessavaliddriver’slicense(andifuseof​personalvehicleonthejobis required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’sNo-FaultDriver’sInsurance)​andmaintainthroughouttheduration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within twelve (12) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout durationofemployment.Mustbeabletocomplete​chainsawtrainingwithin twelve(12)monthsoffromdateofhire.Must complete theonlineHazardCommunicationtrainingimmed​iatelyafterhireornolater than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within six (6) months from date of hire.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Abilityto conductfieldwork indense vegetation or over lava substrate under difficult conditions (e.g.,heat, rain, cold temperatures,poorfooting).Abilityto hike and camp inremote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions for up to five (5) consecutivedays,uptothree(3)weekspermonth​.Abilitytobackpack,lift, and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

College coursework from an accredited college or university in biology, ecology, wildlife management, botany, or related field.Experienceinhuntingferalanimals.Exp​erienceusingradiotelemetry,and GlobalInformationSystem(GIS).Experienceco​nstructing,repairingorinspecting enclosurefencing.Knowledge of endangered fauna andflora species in Hawai‘i. Familiarity with the East Hawai‘i Wildlife/Division of Forestry and Wildlife (EHW/DOFAW).
