Editor – Hawaii Catholic Herald
Overall Responsibility:
The Editor of the Hawaii Catholic Herald oversees the production, distribution and promotion of the printed bi-weekly diocesan newspaper and its related digital forms, providing, procuring, editing and presenting its content. The Editor supports the evangelical and communications mission of the Bishop and Diocese of Honolulu.
Reports to: Bishop of Honolulu Classification: Exempt
Position Summary:
· Editorial: Writes, assigns and edits local stories, news releases and photos. Scans news service stories and photos and downloads selected content for publication.
· Production: Designs and lays out Hawaii Catholic Herald pages, oversees staff proofing of the paper on press day. Converts pages to print quality pdf pages. Sends pdf pages to printer via ftp program.
· Manage contributors: Manages parish and school news reporters, local and selected columnists, the crossword puzzle and other regular features.
· Circulation: Designs Hawaii Catholic Herald parish subscription plan, manages operations of Circulation Manager, keeps subscription/circulation software program operating. Sets subscription prices. Writes donor appeal and mahalo letters.
· Advertising: Manages work of advertising clerk. Determines advertising sizes and prices. Designs and prints rate cards. Creates ads for clients that don’t supply their own. Lays out ads on newspaper page. Coordinates seasonal advertising for parishes, schools, etc. (i.e., Christmas, Easter)
· Internet/social media: Posts stories and photos on hawaiicatholicherald.com and sends pdf of each issue to be digitized and posted. Oversees Herald’s social media, coordinated by Reporter/Photographer (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, blog, podcast, etc.)
· Staff management: Manages Hawaii Catholic Herald Staff. Conducts staff evaluations. Approves employee bi-weekly timesheets.
· Finances: Drafts and manages annual Herald budget and approves payments.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Practicing Catholic in good standing preferred
· Bachelor’s degree in journalism required
· Two years supervisory experience required
· Proficient in the use of MS Office, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop
