Epidemiologist I

Non-Influenza Respiratory Diseases

 

$52,956 - $57,260 per year, salary commensurate with training & experience

 

Exempt, non-civil service appointment.  The primary purpose of this position is to study the distribution and determinants of health-related states and events in particular populations as they related to non-influenza respiratory pathogens and to apply this study to the control of health problems in this subject area.  The position will produce data for decision-making and for detecting, understanding, controlling, and preventing non-influenza respiratory pathogens in the population, including emerging coronaviruses of public health concern, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and adenovirus.

 

 

 Minimum Qualification

 

Education & Experience:  Master’s Degree in Epidemiology or a Master’s Degree in a health-related field for which the candidate completed and passed at least three (3) epidemiological methods courses, one of which must be an advanced level, and at least two (2) biostatistics courses requiring mastery of large datasets and analyses using a statistical software set.  Each qualifying course should have fulfilled a minimum of two (2) credit hours.

 

Knowledge & Experience:  Knowledge of public health principles and practice. Understanding of and familiarity with tenets of infection control, including infection control practices. Understanding of principles and practices of health education. Experience in engaging community partners and using information in designing, interpreting dataand conducting epidemiological assessments.  Work experience and knowledge in public health, microbiology, infection control, developing and promoting health programs in the community and consulting with healthcare providers preferred.

 

Abilities:  Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.  Ability to prepare clear and concise reports utilizing different modes of media–computer, presentations (oral and written), by telephone, and video conference.  Establish cooperative agreements and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of agencies and programs.  Develop and implement project procedures and guidelines.  Plan, develop, implement, and coordinate public information campaigns in-house or through contract services.

 

Travel may be required.

 

License:  Valid State of Hawaii driver’s license is preferred.

This is a temporary, non-civil service exempt position. Employment in such positions is considered to be “at will.”

 

This is a 12-month appointment, federally funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) Cooperative Agreement for the budget period beginning August 1, 2020.  Non-competitive continuing applications for this position are available through the end of a five-year grant period, ending July 31, 2024.
