Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) Student Helper II

$10.85 hourly/part-time 20hrs/week


Exempt, temporary, part-time, non-civil service appointment. The primary purpose of this position is to support the Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) team that conducts surveillance activities for pathogens such as Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, Exchericia coli O157:H7 infections, and other Shiga-toxin-producing E. coli infections, and any other reportable disease.



Minimum Qualification(s)


EDUCATION:  Currently accepted or enrolled in a degree-seeking graduate program (MPH, MS, PhD, or other) in epidemiology, environmental health, or related health care or public health field.


KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:  Some knowledge of the basic principles involved in disease investigation; ability to rapidly acquire a working knowledge of methods and principals involved in the work; ability to understand and carry out simple, oral and written instructions; requires basic knowledge of Business English, spelling, arithmetic, operation and operational maintenance of various office appliances, and equipment; knowledge of computer applications and software including Microsoft Office systems.


ABILITIES:  Ability to perform functions of the job, including operating standard office equipment and record keeping; have good communication and organizational skills, with the ability to work with a variety of people and meet deadlines; excellent verbal and written communication skills; possess a strong interest in infectious disease epidemiology; possess critical thinking skills and judgement; ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships with co-workers, supervisor, and health care professionals; ability to work collaboratively as part of a team; adaptable to change.
