Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Natural Area Reserves Program, located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: $3,927/Mon.
DUTIES: Participates in a variety of activities associated with the Natural Area Reserves System (NARS) and the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW). Performs various resource management, ecosystem restoration, and monitoring activities around the Island of Hawai‘i. Monitors and controls non-native plants and feral ungulates in NARS. Drives project vehicle to work sites. Loads, unloads, aims, and fires airguns from a variety of body positions in authorized project-related research or wildlife control programs. Performs these functions in a safe manner in varying environments and weather conditions. Disassembles, cleans, inspects, and reassembles airguns. Maintains airguns and related equipment in a proper, functional, and safe manner. Establishes and monitors transects to evaluate forest recovery and plant distribution, including rare and endangered species. Collects and analyzes technical field data. Work is primarily located on the island of Hawai‘i, but may occasionally take place on other islands.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
EXPERIENCE
At least one (1) year of field experience working in natural resource management or a closely related field. At least one (1) year of college-level coursework from an accredited college or university in a related discipline (i.e., Biology, Zoology, or a related Natural Science) may substitute for experience.
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora and fauna and threats from alien species. Working knowledge of the principles of ecology and wildlife biology. Knowledge of the safe use of airguns.
ABILITIES & SKILLS
Good oral and written communication skills. Ability to make sound planning and logistical decisions in the field. Ability to use a map and compass to navigate in dense forests. Ability to use Global Positioning System (GPS) units to document rare element locations and remote monitoring plots and transects. Ability to take detailed field notes and develop systems for data collection. Ability to lead volunteers and to coordinate field projects and data collection. Ability to appropriately explain project objectives to the public. Ability to safely apply herbicides. Ability to construct, maintain, and repair ungulate exclusion fences. Ability to manage and control feral animals traps, and dogs. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Condition:Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate and maintain certification throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete external sling load training (A219) within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS
Ability to lift and carry at least fifty (50) pounds unassisted. Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions for four to five (4-5) days a week. Ability to work at high altitudes, in cold and rainy or hot and dry conditions. Ability to work around and fly in approved helicopters.
POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in identification of native plants and non-native plants in Hawai‘i. Field experience in an active resource management program to protect ecosystems in Hawai‘i or elsewhere, especially in the control of noxious/invasive species. Familiarity with the Natural Area Reserves program. Previous experience with the Native Ecosystem Protection Management (NEPM) program.
