Food and Beverage Manager (Kupu Culinary)



Kupu, which means “to sprout” or “to grow” in Hawaiian, has a two-fold mission: to preserve the land while empowering youth. The organization provides hands-on training in conservation, sustainability, and environmental education for young adults, with the goal of fostering our next generation of environmental and cultural stewards. Kupu’s work has been likened to the role of the kupukupu fern, which is one of the first plants to cultivate the land after a lava flow. The fern not only serves as a foundational species for rebuilding a healthy, native ecosystem, but it also symbolizes a place where knowledge can grow.


Established in 2007 as a Honolulu-based 501(c)3 non-profit, Kupu affirms the Hawaiian notion of “ma ka hana ka ʻike” or “in working one learns.” This approach has led to the creation of hundreds of internships and service-learning opportunities which blend vocational training and green leadership development to support more than 100 partner sites across Hawaiʻi and the Pacific region

The Kupu Culinary social enterprise equips under-resourced young adults on Oʻahu with the experiences, education, training, and support needed to become productive members of society with a heart to serve and positively influence the community around them. Kupu Cuilnary provides training and support in the areas of teamwork and life skills, personal and cultural development, education, and job readiness. The social enterprise currently has a catering and food truck business.


Type:  Full-Time               Location:  Honolulu          Reports to: Senior Program Manager


Position Duties

Primary duties for the Business Manager position includes, but is not limited to, the following:


Primary Duties:

  • Supports and supervises approximately 10-15 staff and contractors including lead chefs.
  • Assessing and identifying new opportunities for growth in current and prospective markets.
  • Establishing the social enterprises’ goals and objectives.
  • Recruiting and training new employees.
  • Inspire and develop employees and program alumni.
  • Performing regular employee evaluations to determine areas of improvement.
  • Designing business strategies and plans to meet the company goals.
  • Making sure that the company sufficient resources such as personnel, material, and equipment.
  • Developing a comprehensive budget and performing periodic budget analyses.
  • Ensuring all company activities adhere to legal guidelines and policies.
  • Assessing overall company performance.
  • Managing SquareUp or another POS/inventory software
  • Overseeing the maintenance of a commercial kitchen and food truck.
  • Management of service contracts related to the business.
  • Other duties as needed



  • Bachelor’s degree in business, business management, or other related fields.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in a management position.
  • Outstanding leadership abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of the latest business policies and regulations.
  • Demonstrable analytical thinking and business insight.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions common to the food service trade; knowledge in regard to hygiene and sanitary precautions comment to the food service trade
  • Able to read and understand instructions and recipes; ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal
  • Oʻahu based, and willing to commute to various places on O’ahu for events/programming
  • Able to conduct self in a professional manner
  • Available part-time Monday through Friday, as well as for possible weekends, evenings, and periodic neighbor island trips.
  • Must meet Criminal History Background Check requirements
  • Able and willing to drive for Kupu business and to meet driver’s abstract requirements
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
