Job Description

GOFARM WCF PROGRAM ASSOCIATE – ID# 220098. 

 

College of Tropical Agriculture & Human Resources.  Regular, Part-Time (50% FTE), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the College of Tropical Agriculture & Human Resources (CTAHR), GoFarm Hawai‘i, located at the Waiawa Correctional Facility (WCF) in Honolulu, Oahu. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:$1,212/Mon. (@ 50% FTE). 

 

DUTIES: 

  • Implements GoFarm Hawai‘i training program at the Waiawa Correctional Facility.
  • Works with each student cohort, coordinates program and lessons, teaches classes, schedules and coordinates guest speakers, and provides in-field lessons/demonstrations (including safety and equipment usage, clearing fields, driving machinery and transporting tools and supplies, seeding, weeding, crop management, irrigation, harvesting and post-harvest handling, washing, packaging, chilling, and distribution).
  • Coordinates orders and delivery and ensures Waiawa Correctional Facility rules are followed.
  • Works closely with Waiawa Correctional Facility staff to ensure adherence to site rules. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/TRAINING: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Agricultural Sciences, Natural Resources and Environmental Management (NREM), Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences (PEPS), Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences (TPSS), or related field.
  • (At least five (5) years of successful farming and produce marketing in Hawai‘i may substitute for Bachelor’s Degree.).

 

EXPERIENCE: 

  • At least one (1) year of experience in one or more of the following:  farming, farm management; teaching agriculture, botany, biology, or related field; or coordinating an agricultural research or agricultural education program. 

 

ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: 

  • Strong knowledge of growing raw agriculture commodities, specifically vegetable and orchard crops grown in Hawai‘i.
  • Knowledge of small-scale agriculture: how to optimize field conditions, soil conditions, and crop yield; farm safety; farm equipment maintenance; and irrigation systems installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Knowledge of pesticide handler/applicator requirements; food safety handling requirements; and others.
  • Proficient computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, internet, and email. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to manage and execute tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to remain positive, respectful, and firm while teaching and interacting with students.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to multitask, prioritize, and follow multiple sets of rules.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.
  • Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a State of Hawai‘i Department of Public Safety background check and screening process. Must be able to pass State of Hawai‘i Department of Public Safety Volincor program training within one (1) month from date of hire. Must be able to complete pesticide safety course within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. 

 

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted.
  • Ability to work in the sun for up to six (6) hours/day.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Experience with food safety and organic certifications.
  • Knowledge of agribusinesses in Hawai‘i; agribusiness opportunities, and value-added agricultural products.
  • Knowledge of requirements for various State and Federal agricultural certifications (e.g., organic industry requirements).
  • Experience working with incarcerated adults. Experience with small equipment repair.
