Position Summary
The Grade 9 Academic & College Counselor assists students in transitioning successfully into high school while building strong academic and personal foundations.
Key Responsibilities
- Support students in adjusting to high school expectations and academic rigor.
- Assist with course planning and academic goal setting.
- Introduce long-term college and career planning concepts.
- Promote the development of study skills and time management.
Core Responsibilities
All counselors within the Counseling Department share the following responsibilities:
- Student Counseling & SupportProvide individual and small group counseling to support students' academic, social-emotional, and personal development.
- Assist students in developing coping strategies, problem-solving skills, and emotional resilience.
- Support students experiencing academic difficulties, behavioral concerns, or personal challenges.
- Maintain confidentiality and ethical counseling practices in accordance with professional standards.
Academic Advising
- Assist students in academic planning and goal setting.
- Monitor student academic progress and provide early intervention when concerns arise.
- Support the development of effective study habits, time management, and organizational skills.
Student Advocacy
- Advocate for students' academic and social-emotional needs within the school environment.
- Identify students who may require additional support and facilitate appropriate referrals.
- Participate in student support meetings and intervention planning.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and support staff to promote student success.
- Communicate with parents and guardians regarding student development and concerns when appropriate.
- Participate in department meetings, school initiatives, and professional development opportunities.
Program Implementation
- Support implementation of school-wide counseling programs and initiatives.
- Contribute to promoting a positive and supportive school climate.
Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of counseling interactions and student records.
- Follow ethical and professional counseling standards.
- Participate in professional development and continuing education.
Additional Duties
- This position may include additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Vice Principal of Counseling and/ or the Principal to support school operations and student success.
- Responsibilities may be adjusted in response to emerging student needs, program development, and institutional priorities.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Educational Psychology, or a closely related field, or current enrollment in a graduate program leading to one of these degrees.
- Experience working with school-aged children or adolescents in an educational setting preferred.
- Knowledge of student development, academic advising, and social-emotional learning practices.
- Ability to provide individual and group counseling support.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students, families, faculty, and administrators.
- Commitment to confidentiality, ethical practice, and professional standards.
