Job Description

                                                          HOOKUPU CENTER EVENT SPECIALIST

                                                                        POSITION DESCRIPTION

Kupu, which means “to sprout” or “to grow” in Hawaiian, has a two-fold mission: to preserve the land while empowering youth. The organization provides hands-on training in conservation, sustainability, and environmental education for young adults, with the goal of fostering our next generation of environmental and cultural stewards. Kupu’s work has been likened to the role of the kupukupu fern, which is one of the first plants to cultivate the land after a lava flow. The fern not only serves as a foundational species for rebuilding a healthy, native ecosystem, but it also symbolizes a place where knowledge can grow.

Established in 2007 as a Honolulu-based 501(c)3 non-profit, Kupu affirms the Hawaiian notion of “ma ka hana ka ike” or “in working one learns.” This approach has led to the creation of hundreds of internships and service-learning opportunities which blend vocational training and green leadership development to support more than 100 partner sites across Hawaii and the Pacific region

Mission

“To empower youth to serve their communities through character-building, service-learning, and environmental stewardship opportunities that encourage integrity (pono) with Ke Akua, self, and others.”

Program Description

The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Ho‘okupu Center strives to revitalize Hawai‘i’s communities by providing local youth with tools to reach their full potential as next-generation leaders and environmental stewards. The Hawaiian word ho‘okupu, means “offering.” The word also carries the connotation of creating an environment that encourages things to kupu, or “sprout”, and grow.

Inspired by both definitions, the Ho‘okupu Center is an offering to the community and a place where Kupu programs develop Hawai‘i’s next generation of environmental stewards. The center’s aim is to move Hawai‘i toward a more resilient and pono (virtuous) future by engaging its youth members and the broader community in service and ‘ina (land)-based education.

The Ho‘okupu Center’s facilities support Kupu programs, offering youth real-world and transferable job-skills training in the conservation and culinary fields. Housing a commercial kitchen, training rooms, classrooms and meeting spaces, the Ho‘okupu Center also offers opportunities for the broader community, such as new and innovative events, exhibitions and educational workshops, and engagement in conservation, sustainability, Hawaiian culture and community service.
