Job Description



School of Ocean & Earth Science & Technology.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean & Earth Science & Technology (SOEST), Department of Geology and Geophysics, located at the University of Hawai‘i  (Manoa) in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 




DUTIES:  Prepares and analyzes natural samples (water, mineral solids, plants, etc.) for carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, and/or oxygen isotope analysis. Reviews results for quality assurance and quality control. Organizes data in database and provides results in summary tables. Troubleshoots and performs maintenance as needed for laboratory instruments including isotope gas ratio mass spectrometers and their peripherals.  Assists in instructing and teaching other laboratory users. 


PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Oceanography, Chemistry, Geology, Biology, Marine or Environmental Science, or related field. (Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university plus two (2) additional years’ experience in scientific research lab may substitute for a Master’s degree).  EXPERIENCE:  At least two (2) years’ experience in a science research lab setting. Experience with the application of stable isotope data to scientific research. Experience with scientific instrument operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledgeable in database inputting, Excel, word processing, and organization/management. Working knowledge of isotope gas ratio mass spectrometers.  Good communication skills, high level of organization and ability to work independently.  Post-Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to complete the UH Manoa Hazardous Waste Generator Training within one (1) month from date of hire. Must be able to complete the Office of Research Compliance (ORC) 101 General Biosafety Training within one (1) month from date of hire. Must be able to complete the General Laboratory Safety Training within one (1) month from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).  


SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Proven experience working with isotope gas ratio mass spectrometers, particularly those coupled with an elemental analyzer or gas chromatograph. Working knowledge of Isodat Software and isotope gas ratio mass spectrometer operation and repair.
