Job Description

The Library and Archives Photo Collections Technician is responsible for assisting the Collections Manager in the care and maintenance of collections within the division or department, and their associated records. The Technician is primarily responsible for processing and cataloging unprocessed cellulose acetate and nitrocellulose photographic negative collections. Responsibilities include the physical handling of negative collections, identifying negative types, rehousing negatives, amending records, and the potential digitization of collections.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participates in the processing of collections in accordance with Museum and department policies and procedures, and federal and state law.
  • Participates in the identification, recording, and organization of the collections according to departmental and disciplinary standards to enhance preservation, access and retrieval of materials for study and exhibition.
  • Participates in, and assists the staff in safe collections access and responds to inquires to provide accurate and appropriate information.
  • Assists with the planning, arrangement, and maintenance of storage systems and appropriately secures the collection to ensure the physical welfare of the collections and associated records.
  • Works with collections staff to develop and maintain retrieval systems to enhance access to and use of the collections, and associated information.
  • May supervise the work of interns and/or volunteers on specific projects.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned, to accomplish the goals of the Museum.


  • B.A. or B.S. preferred, although students completing an undergraduate degree in a related field will be considered.
  • 1-2 years prior experience working with photographic negatives or archival collections preferred.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally.
  • Computer-literate, ability to use/learn various computer applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
  • Ability to maintain composure when working under time constraints and to meet deadlines.

Working Conditions


Conditions include exposure to chemical irritants present in collections and collections storage areas (acetic acid, nitric acid, nitrogen dioxide, and nitrous oxide) at levels below occupational safety and health exposure limits. Respirator training and certification are available.


Physical Requirements


Occasionally required to climb stairs, lift heavy objects, and do repetitive tasks with few breaks.
