DUTIES: Conducts a broad spectrum of native ecosystem protection and management activities on the Island of Maui.Tasks include, but are not limited to control of non-native plantsandanimals;vegetationmonitoring;seedcollection;andoutplantingnativeplants throughouttheMauiNaturalAreaReservesSystem(NARS),aswellasothermanaged lands.Drives to access field sites. Oversees field assistants, volunteers, and interns on work assignments in the absence of the Field Crew Leader. Maintains field equipment, tracks supply inventories, and assists withpublic relations activities. Assists with projects related to infrastructure development (e.g., fences, land zones, trails and baseyards), outreach and education (e.g., signage) and other critical items related to EcosystemProtectionandManagement (NEPM) mission. DatacollectionandreportingrequirestheuseofGlobal Positioning Systems (GPS), ArcGIS, field notes, photographs, aerial surveys, and Microsoft Office.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
Associate’s Degreefromanaccredited community college or university. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and two (2) years ofexperienceinworkrelatedto natural resource management may substitute for an Associate’s Degree.).
EXPERIENCE
One to three(1-3)yearsofexperienceinworkrelatedto natural resource management.
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora, fauna, and threats from alien species.Knowledge of weed control techniques and tools, including familiarity with pesticides. Knowledge of wildlife control techniques. Knowledge of the safe use of air guns.
ABILITIES & SKILLS
Must be willing and able to work with and around pesticides. Ability to use smart phone, compass, map, and GPS hand-held units and personal computer (PC).Ability to input field data into a computerusingdatabaseandspreadsheetprograms. Abilitytocommunicatewellorallyandinwriting. Must be able to operate hand and power tools. Must possessavaliddriver’slicense(andifuseofpersonal vehicleonthejobisrequired,mustalsohavevalid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-FaultDriver’sInsurance)andmaintainthroughout thedurationofemployment.Mustbeabletodrivea4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. PostOffer/EmploymentConditions:Mustpossessthe AmericanRedCrossCertificationinFirstAid/CPR(or be able to obtain the certificate following the training providedwithinthree(3)monthsfromdateofhire)and maintainthroughoutdurationofemployment.Mustbe abletocompletebasichelicoptersafetycourse (A100) within three(3)monthsfromdateofhire.Mustbeableto completechainsawtrainingwithintwelve(12)months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS
Ability to camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions for up to five (5) consecutive days.Ability to hike up to ten (10) miles on irregular terrain with backpacks weighing up to forty(40)poundsunassisted.Mustbeabletoconduct fieldworkindensevegetationunderdifficultconditions (e.g.,heat,rain,coldtemperatures,andpoorfooting).
POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT
As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies, procedures, and trainings and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies, procedures, and trainings. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Natural Resource Management or closely related field. Experience working in directnaturalresourcemanagement. Experienceworkingwith native ecosystems in Hawai‘i. Familiarity with NEPM or NARS. Previous hunting and or air gun training or experience. Previous field work experience on Maui.
