(5) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Natural Resources/Ecosystem Restoration (NR/ER), Native Ecosystem Protection and Management (NEPM) Section, located in Kahului, Maui. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $4,071 - $4,400/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Assists with field operations to include conducting biodiversity and conservation assessments for native and non-native land and freshwater snails, invertebrates and rare plants for DOFAW Managed lands Maui Nui. Assists with planning, conducting, and data collection of ground surveys. Conducts all operations according to accepted safety standards and established protocols. Keeps accurate and detailed records of daily work.  Operates a Global Positioning System (GPS) and downloads GPS units.  Inputs and updates data and produces maps and other materials to guide daily field activities. Assists with maintenance of equipment/field gear, vehicles, and project baseyard, including proper storage of herbicides. Contributes to creating and preserving a positive work environment and serves as a valued member of the field team. Requires a flexible work schedule including early morning and late-night hours and occasional weekends. Requires frequent camping for four to five (4-5) days a week, up to three (3) weeks per month. Drives project vehicles to work sites. Travels and works in and around helicopters. Works extended, irregular hours. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

 

EDUCATION

Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college or university. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and two (2) years of experience in work related to natural resource management may substitute for an Associate’s Degree.).

EXPERIENCE

Two to four(2-4)yearsoffieldexperiencesurveying plant and animal populations and work in remote settings.

KNOWLEDGE

Working knowledgeoffloraandfauna,andthreatsfrom alienspecies.Workingknowledgeoftheprinciplesof ecology and wildlife biology.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to communicate well orally and in writing. Ability to read maps and aerial photographs and document work.  Ability and experience working with small, hand tools (Machete, etc.)  Ability to input field data into a computerusing database and spreadsheet programs. Abilitytonavigateusingacompass,map,andGlobal Positioning System (GPS) hand-held units.Abilitytoworkindependently. Ability to learn to identify numerous native and non-native land and freshwater snails, flatworms, and earthworms. Ability to accurately collect and store data for target species survey and control activities Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personalvehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) andmaintainthroughouttheduration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess CertificationinFirstAid/CPR(orbeabletoobtainthe certificatefollowingthetrainingprovidedwithintwelve (12) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment.  MustcompletetheonlineHazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.Mustbeabletocompletebasichelicopter safety course (A100) within six (6) months from date of hire.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to conduct fieldwork in dense vegetation or over lava substrate under difficult conditions (e.g., heat,rain,coldtemperatures,poorfooting).Abilityto hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions for up to five (5) consecutive days, up to three (3) weeks per month. Ability to backpack, lift, and carry up to fifty (40) pounds unassisted.

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

 

Experience working in and around helicopters.  Field experience in an active resource management program to protect ecosystems in Hawai‘i or elsewhere, especially in the control of noxious/invasive species.  Experience using handheld GPS units and ArcGIS software.  Ability to make sound planning and logistical decisions in the field.  Ability to identify a wide variety of native and alien plants/animals.
