MEDICAL ASSISTANT 2: MATERNAL CHILD HEALTH (OB/PERINATAL)

Understanding health as wellbeing in the broadest sense, KKV pioneers holistic approaches to addressing the needs and aspirations of its culturally-rich community. KKV's 200+ staff care for more than 15,000 Kalihi residents a year in over 20 different languages and dialects from nine locations.   

In 2014, Kokua Kalihi Valley began a process to develop a new framework of health that accommodates the full spectrum of strengths, challenges, desires, and needs of the community. Through careful and continual listening and engagement, a more universal view of health and wellness is emerging centered around what matters to indigenous and island people. This view, named Pilinahā, looks at four vital connections that people seek in their lives: To your best self, to others, to place, and to past and future.   

KKV is recognized nationally as a leader in Social Determinants Of Health (SDOH) programming with a 50 year history of implementing innovative programs, and annually hosts hundreds of visitors and students interested in studying KKV's community-and culturally-based approach.  

In 2022, KKV won first place in the Innovations Showcase Competition put on by the Social Determinants of Health Academy. We were recognized for our Hui Hoaka Covid response program. Framed by indigenous Hawaiian values, the program has coordinated staff and volunteers from across KKV and the community to provide a broad array of support for patients and their family members. The program has been highly successful because of its effort to provide deep listening and culturally safe communication; to provide access to resources such as food, supplies, lāʻaulapaʻau, and economic support; and to collect stories and data that will aid KKV in improving care integration and establishingbest practices for SDOH services.

POSITION OPENINGS: One FULL time position open (40 hours a week)

JOB SUMMARY:  Responsible for intake, case management, health education and outreach for perinatal/family planning clients. Assist all providers by supporting high quality health care to all medical clients. 

Special consideration given to multicultural/multilingual candidates and those with a connection to the ahupuaʻa of Kalihi.
Salary commensurate with experience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

• Skills/Knowledge: 

  Ability to operate different medical equipment such as Glucometer, EKG, Blood pressure apparatus, required. 

  Knowledge of advanced medical terminology and clinical procedures, required. 

  Ability to administer medications safely, including subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, required.  
  Knowledge of prenatal care protocols and OB-Specific procedures, required. 

  Ability to assist perinatal care provider with OB exams, pap smears, colposcopies, IUD insertions and minor procedures, required. 
  Knowledge to help with the development of case planning, required. 

  Effective verbal and written communication skills, required. 

  Ability to work in a team setting, required. 

  Ability to work with multi-cultural staff and client populations, required.  

  Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate cultural sensitivity, especially when working with diverse populations, required.  

  Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with patients and the healthcare team, required.  

  Proficient in computer patient care software including eMDs, required.
  Ability to prioritize urgent OB situations (e.g., preterm labor signs, abnormal fetal heart tones)  

• Education/Training: 

  High school diploma, required. 

  Medical Assistant certificate, required or RN graduate from other country, required.   

  CPR certification, required. 

  Specialized training in OB and Family Planning care, preferred. 

• Experience: 

  Completed medical externship as required by school, required.  
  Minimum 5 years of clinical experience in a healthcare setting (2 of which medical assisting), required.  

  Minimum 3 years of experience in obstetrics, gynecology, or family planning services, required.  

   

  Other: 

  Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities, required. 

  Commitment to patient-centered care and reproductive health services, required.  

  Lives in the Kalihi Valley area, preferred. 

   

SCHEDULE: 7:30 am - 6:00 pm; Monday - Saturday; Full Time position requires 10 hour/day and 4 days/week. Equivalent to a 40 hour a week schedule with regular and predictable attendance. Work hours may be flexible to meet department needs.

• Jury Duty: Time off for Jury duty: KKV will pay employees the difference between normal rate of pay and sum provided by the court for a maximum of 1 month.
