Job Description



John A. Burns School of Medicine.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), Department of Tropical Medicine, Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology, Minority Health Research Training (MHRT) Program in Health Disparities, located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 




DUTIES:  Assists with developing and implementing a global health disparities research-training course every academic year for graduate and undergraduate students. Assists with ensuring project learning objectives and training curriculum are implemented, and with facilitating student progress throughout the program.  Collects and analyzes data to evaluate the program’s success, and to ensure objectives are being met. Advertises the program and out-of-state research experiences on campus and on social media.   Coordinates the logistics of student and faculty travel and housing. Assists Principal Investigator (PI) with collecting information of student progress. Drives to various work sites (e.g., UH Manoa Campus) to assist with student recruitment and interviews. Facilitates consistent communication between students and their mentors throughout the program.  Provides administrative support and logistical assistance entailing a variety of communications technology (e.g., email and teleconferencing) for other research and program activities, such as advisory committee meetings and events. Assists with preparing project manuals, reports, presentations, and newsletters as they pertain to student research training and mentoring. Works with the PIs on completing the program’s annual progress reports and ensures timely submission. Assists PIs with creating graphs and visual diagrams to depict grant deliverables to sponsor. Assists with providing information that shows whether program objectives were met or unmet. Assists with MHRT Program participant functions by ensuringthatallpersonneldocuments of program staff arecompleteand accurate while maintaining participant files with proper security measures. 


PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Business, Public Health, Health Sciences, Social Sciences, or a related field.  EXPERIENCE:  One to three (1-3) years of experience providing administrative support to academic training or to community research programs, and working with student services and students from underrepresented ethnic groups.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Proficiency in word processing (e.g. MS Word), presentation (e.g., Power Point or Graphpad), and database/spreadsheet (e.g., MS Excel) programs. Proficiency in communications technology such as email (e.g., Gmail) and teleconferencing (e.g., Zoom, Skype, WhatsApp, Viber, etc.). Demonstrated and functional knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in business administration concepts and terminology.  Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, Federal and State laws, rules, regulations, and systems associated with business administration. Ability to communicate and interact professionally and effectively, verbally and in writing, with faculty, students, organizations, and community stakeholders. Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions. Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced office environment.  Ability to adapt to use of various technology and other tools necessary to carry out program activities. Strong interpersonal and problem solving skills required. Must be able to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.  Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced office environment with frequent deadlines. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Able to lift and carry up to thirty (30) pounds. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration or related field. Experience conducting research, project administration and management, or work in a university setting. Understanding of global heath and health disparities. Understanding of University of Hawai‘i (UH) and Research Corporation of the University of Hawai‘i (RCUH) policies and procedures.
