Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Maui Invasive Species Committee (MISC), located in Paia, Maui. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: $4,071/Mon
DUTIES: Provides comprehensive training on Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) prevention/detection and technical assistance to partner agencies, private industry stakeholders, and community stakeholders. Conducts field surveys for CRB and assists in identifying specimens collected as a result of surveys, as well as from samples submitted by the public and other agencies. Participates in CRB monitoring data collection efforts and enters data into appropriate databases. Drives to and from field sites and events. Assists in other activities related to the CRB strategy for Maui, this includes assisting with applied research and extension activities of the Maui Invasive Species Committee. Assists with implementing community-based monitoring programs. Expected outcomes of the program include enhanced awareness of CRB issues and development of educational resources to prevent and monitor for the invasive pest species in collaboration with community, industry and natural resource managers.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in natural sciences or communication-related field. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and an additional two (2) years of experience may substitute for an Associate’s Degree.).
EXPERIENCE
One to two (1-2) years of experience in natural resources, agriculture, nursery and landscaping, insect pest control, or science communication related field.
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of Hawaiian biota and threats from incipient alien plant and animal invasions in Hawai‘i. Knowledge of basic biological principles and ecosystem dynamics. Knowledge of field techniques used to identify, detect and control invasive species. Familiarity with common native and introduced Hawaiian plants and animal species. Familiarity with social media presence and website design and maintenance. Knowledge of the Hawaiian community, economy, and politics. Basic understanding of agriculture, nursery and landscaping, or insect pest control industry practices.
ABILITIES & SKILLS
Must have good oral and written communication skills, some computer skills in word processing, spread-sheeting and basic office software. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment). Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. If selected for helicopter transport, must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to conduct field work in remote locations under adverse conditions as needed.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Understanding of invasive Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle issues and prevention strategies in Hawai‘i. Understanding of integrated pest management concepts.
