MISC OPERATIONS COORDINATOR – ID# 225218.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Maui Invasive Species Committee (MISC), located in Paia, Maui. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $5,286.68 - $5,498.84/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Serves as lead heli manager for MISC helicopter operations. Oversees trip planning and coordination with contracted helicopter vendors and other project Coordinators. Prepares supplies/equipment for helicopter operations and troubleshoots/repairs helicopter spray equipment. Oversees MISC drone and remote sensing projects and serves as lead for MISC Herbicide Ballistic Technology (HBT) operations. Serves as MISC Project Safety Officer. Conducts and documents regular safety meetings. Conducts scheduled and unscheduled safety inspections of MISC facilities and ensures any deficiencies are resolved. Follows up on accidents and takes appropriate action to prevent reoccurrence. Oversees maintenance and repairs for project grounds, baseyards, and office/headquarters. Assists with maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing equipment.  Makes purchasing recommendations, researches and interacts with vendors, provides technical specifications, obtains quotes, and secures supplies. Leads early detection and rapid response actions for vertebrate & invertebrate pest species in coordination with project Coordinators and appropriate partner agencies. Assists with coordinating multi-agency responses. Collects, maintains and analyzes data from rapid response operations. Directs, supervises, and assigns work to MISC staff.  Duties include, but are not limited to, supervision of work, personnel functions and managing safety of direct reports. Works in the field, independently and as part of a team, to eradicate or control invasive alien plant and animal species. Fieldwork involves reconnaissance, thorough surveys, and mechanical/chemical removal for invasive alien species in natural, urban, and suburban areas. Performs physical habitat modification to facilitate  control work. Records and reports daily activities on maps, online data collection systems and  data sheets for each work site. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

 

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biological Sciences, Agriculture, Resources Management/ Conservation, or a related field. 

EXPERIENCE

Three to five (3-5) years of work experience in field activities relating to invasive species control or natural resources management. Experience includes communicating and coordinating with agency personnel and private landowners. Experience working in and around helicopters.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of Hawaiian natural history and threats from incipient alien plant and animal invasions in Hawai‘i. Knowledge of identification and detection techniques appropriate for MISC target species. Knowledge of common native species. Knowledge of appropriate mechanical/chemical control techniques for invasive species, including safe and effective use of pesticides. Knowledge of Hawaiian community, economy, and politics. Knowledge of basic computer programs including databases and geographic information systems (GIS) and data collection/management procedures. Knowledge of safety programs and protocols for field operations. Knowledge of management principles including, but not limited to, supervising/developing employees, EEO, workplace safety, corrective/disciplinary actions, and administration of policies and procedures.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with a wide variety of people. Excellent organizational skills and ability to independently complete multi-step projects by set deadlines. Demonstrated proficiency in followingproject’s administrative, operational, and safety protocols and use and maintenance of project gear and equipment. Ability to accurately collect, store, and manage data for survey and control activities and to train/mentor staff in these activities. Mapmaking abilities using ArcGIS. Ability to train, work, and troubleshoot with staff in use of small mechanized equipment. Ability to read and navigate using topographic maps, state tax map keys (TMK), aerial photographs, and use GPS. Ability to collect detailed field data, organize and summarize data, and write clear and concise reports. Ability to use hand tools, heavy equipment, and portable pesticide applicators. Ability to establish work standards/expectations and clear direction to meet goals and objectives of ongoing work for direct reports.  Ability to review work and evaluate performance and job competencies of direct reports. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Ability to work in and around helicopters and maintain a helicopter manager certification. Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check.  Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment).  Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course and heli-manager courses/certification within six (6) months from date of hire. Must be able to obtain and maintain State of Hawai‘i Certification for Application of Restricted Use Pesticides within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months. 

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to backpack, lift, and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted while working in the field.  Ability to work in rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

 

Experience working with control of invasive species in Hawai‘i or elsewhere. Experience using pesticides. Demonstrated experience using chainsaws. Demonstrated leadership ability. Experience with public speaking.
