Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Maunakea Observatories Shared Services (MKSS), Center for Maunakea Stewardship (CMS)/Institute for Astronomy (6-7), located in Hilo and on Maunakea on the Island of Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 


MONTHLY SALARY:  Salary commensurate with qualifications. 


DUTIES:  Exercises delegated as Principal Investigator (PI) authority for Maunakea Observatories Shared Services (MKSS) accounts and operations. Coordinates supervision with Center for Maunakea Stewardship (CMS) of administrative staff in carrying out personnel, fiscal, and logistical tasks.  Interacts with Maunakea Observatory organizations through MKSS Oversight Committee and through day-to-day contacts.  Interacts and coordinates activities with the Center for Maunakea Stewardship, the University of Hawai‘i (UH) at Hilo, and other organizations.  Assists with preparation and manages annual budget and assists in presenting to Oversight Committee.  Oversees the management of the food and lodging operations, maintenance operations, and visitor information station functions.  Coordinates special projects. 




Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university.


Eight to ten (8-10) years of experience in personnel and fiscal management.  Experience in recruiting and managing personnel.


Knowledge of employment and personnel regulations.  Knowledge of safety management, food & lodging management, road maintenance, equipment/infrastructure and maintenance/management. Knowledge of purchasing and inventory requirements and restrictions.


Ability to schedule, direct, coordinate, plan, negotiate, and delegate to manage a multi-support operation.  Ability to create and balance budgets. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.


Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.

Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration, Accounting, or related field.  Experience working with State, University and RCUH personnel and fiscal systems.  Experience working with astronomical observatories.
