Job Description

MMID SENIOR RESEARCH TECHNICIAN – ID# 19244. 

 

John A. Burns School of Medicine.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), Molecular Medicine & Infectious Diseases (MMID) Laboratory, located at the Kaka‘ako Campus in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,163/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Develops and conducts experiments with clinical specimens using molecular biology, protein chemistry, immunology, and cell biology with minimal supervision.  The techniques used to conduct the experiments shall include, but are not limited to, practical knowledge of DNA and RNA isolation; polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and real-time and relative PCR; gel electrophoresis; cytokine measurements using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), and multiplexing using Luminex. Performs Western blot analysis, Southern blot analysis, protein techniques, such as immuno-precipitation, tissue culture, sample preparation for use in flow cytometry and cell sorting, and statistical analysis.  Requires familiarity with PC and Apple software (e.g., graphing programs, Microsoft Office, and Adobe). Uses medical library resources, such as PubMed and Ovid.  Organizes data in a written format and prepares figures for scientific manuscripts and grants.  Prepares clinical data sets using Excel.  Assists with procurement of laboratory supplies. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  PhD from an accredited college or university in a Biology related field.  EXPERIENCE:  Three to five (3-5) years of work experience in a research position or as a Graduate Student conducting research in molecular biology, protein chemistry, immunology, cell biology, or pharmacology; including experience with the following techniques: DNA and RNA preparation; real time and relative PCR; cytokine measurements using ELISA, and multiplexing using Luminex. Experience in performing Western blot analysis, Southern blot analysis, protein techniques, such as immuno-precipitation, tissue culture, sample preparation for use in flow cytometry and cell sorting, and statistical analysis.  Experience in using medical library resources, such as PubMed and Ovid.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of cell and molecular biology, immunology, and protein chemistry theory and methods. Knowledge in using medical library resources, such as PubMed and Ovid. Knowledge in preparing data sets using Excel. Practical knowledge of tissue culture.  Knowledge in maintaining research laboratory equipment. Working knowledge of Apple and PC software (e.g., graphing programs, Microsoft Office, and Adobe).  Ability to perform tissue culture.  Ability to organize work. Ability to develop protocols, problem solve, and multi-task.  Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Strong organizational and planning skills.Ability to organize data in a written format, prepare manuscripts, and present at national scientific meetings.  Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must complete Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Human Subject training within three (3) months from date of hire.  Must complete required training(s) provided by the JABSOM Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHSO) within one (1) month from date of hire.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Duties require periods in a biosafety cabinet or at a laboratory bench and involves the use of human viral and bacterial pathogens, tumor cell lines, toxic chemicals, and radioactivity. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Prior peer-reviewed publications and experience presenting at scientific meetings.  Experience working with patient specimens.  Experience with mitochondrial energetics.
