PCSU INRMP WILDLIFE TECHNICIAN ASSISTANT – ID# 226243.

(2) Regular, Full-Time, Limited-Term (not to exceed six (6) months in duration with a possibility of extension), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), performing project tasks on land controlled by the U.S. Navy, located at Joint Base Pearl Harbor – Hickam (JBPHH), on the island of Oahu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

 

MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,927/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Performs office and fieldwork as part of the PCSU team supporting JBPHH. Conducts regular field monitoring for protected species (avian, mammalian, plant, and marine species). Supports efforts in the identification, protection, and enhancement of native species and ecosystems, with emphasis on rare, threatened, and endangered species and unique ecosystems to the various sections of JBPHH on O‘ahu. Assists in clearing and maintaining trails to remote areas. Participates in a variety of projects to support Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan (INRMP) execution. This includes targeted surveys of protected species on base, and invasive and/or predatory species monitoring and trapping. Responds to reports of injured wildlife, which may potentially be outside of core working hours. Drives project vehicles to access field sites.

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

 

EDUCATION

High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years of work experience in or related to managing natural resources. Experience needs to be documented well and acquired under the employment of an academic institution, governmental agency, private company, or non-profit organization in the appropriate field. (Associate’s Degree from an accredited two (2) year college or university may substitute one (1) year of experience).

KNOWLEDGE

Basic knowledge of the natural history of native Hawaiian wildlife. Basic familiarity with native Hawaiian ecosystems, plants, and wildlife. Familiarity with techniques used to inventory and monitor wildlife and other natural resource assets.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to work well in a team setting and independently on tasks. Ability to maintain a positive, professional attitude in support of a productive work environment. Must have good oral and written communication skills. Ability to take good field notes and record biological data with a global positioning system (GPS). Ability to collect, organize, and manage a variety of field data. Ability to use word-processing, database, and spreadsheet programs. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to obtain a Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance for employment as a Navy contractor. Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to unclassified information. Must be able to complete Wilderness First Aid training within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to complete chainsaw training within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete rappelling training within three (3)  months from date of hire

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Able and willing to conduct work under strenuous outdoor conditions (e.g., extreme weather, thick brush, and steep terrain) on a secure military base. Ability to hike, camp, and work in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, up to five (5) consecutive days. Must be able to lift up to forty-five (45) pounds unassisted. Must be able to hike five (5) miles per day on uneven terrain. Must not be acrophobic.

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

 

Field experience working in Hawai‘i conducting active resource management to protect ecosystems. Knowledge of Department of the Navy natural resources programs in general, and the policy and organizational contexts within which they are managed.
