Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), performing project tasks on land controlled by the U.S. Navy, located at the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) in Kekaha, Kauai. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: $4,376/Mon.
DUTIES: Plans and implements wildlife predator control activities (e.g., trapping and use of air guns) in support of the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) Natural Resources (NR) Program. Operates in up to four (4) management areas within PMRF (Barking Sands, Makaha Ridge, Kamokala Ridge Magazine, and Kokee), monitoring and controlling non-native predators including barn owls, cats, rats, mice, and feral pigs. Monitoring may also include the breeding success of endangered bird species to evaluate effectiveness of predator control activities. Operates equipment such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS), handheld radios, cameras, etc. Operates 4- wheel drive (4WD) trucks or All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV). Drives project vehicles to access field sites. Collects various data in the field and enters data into computer. Assists in the preparation of simple maps and other tasks related to keeping accurate records of the fieldwork accomplished. Loads, unloads, aims, and fires airguns from a variety of body positions in authorized project-related research or wildlife control programs. Performs these functions in a safe manner in varying environments and weather conditions. Disassembles, cleans, inspects and reassembles airguns. Maintains airguns and related equipment in a proper, functional, and safe manner. Responds to reports of injured wildlife, which may potentially be outside of core working hours. Performs basic construction tasks and simple maintenance on tools and vehicles. Orders supplies and materials for field projects. Whenever possible, provides supplemental information on distribution and breeding success rates of endangered seabirds within the study areas and occasionally assists with seabird monitoring work if needed.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biological Sciences, NaturalResourceManagement,Wildlife Biology,orarelatedfield. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent with an additional three (3) years of related work experience in natural resource management, predator control, or related field may substitute for a Bachelor’s Degree.).
EXPERIENCE
Atleastone(1)year of workexperienceinorrelatedtomanagingnaturalresources.Experienceneedstobedocumentedwell and acquired under the employment of an academic institution, governmentalagency,private company,ornon-profitorganizationintheappropriatefield.
KNOWLEDGE
Basic knowledge of the natural history of native Hawaiianwildlife.BasicfamiliaritywithnativeHawaiianecosystems,nativeHawaiianplants,andwildlife.Familiaritywithtechniquesusedtoinventoryandmonitorwildlifeandothernaturalresourceassets.Familiaritywithtechniquesusedtoinventoryandcontrolnon-native predators.
ABILITIES & SKILLS
Must be able to work well in a team setting, as well as work independently on tasks. Must be able to maintain a positive professional attitude in support of a productive work environment. Must have good oral and written communication skills. Ability to prepare a comprehensive work plan. Ability to take good field notes and record biological data with a GPS. Ability to collect, organize, and manage a variety of field data. Ability to analyze data and present findings and recommendations in written report format. Ability to use word processing, database, and spreadsheet programs. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with automatic transmission. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS
Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50)pounds unassisted. Able and willing to conduct work under strenuousoutdoor conditions (e.g. extreme weather, thick brush, steep terrain) on asecuredmilitarybase.
POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Fieldwork with emphasis on predator control with a land management agency or a County, State, or Federal program in Hawai‘i strongly preferred. Experience hunting birds using air guns, traps, and other prescribed methods. Previous experience monitoring endangered Hawaiian seabirds. Experience in identification of native Hawaiian plants and animals and non-native plants. Knowledge of Department of the Navy natural resources programs, policies, and organizational contexts within which they are managed.
