Job Description



University of Hawai‘i Cancer Center.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawai‘i Cancer Center (UH Cancer Center), located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 


MONTHLY SALARY:  Salary commensurate with qualifications. 


DUTIES:  Performs a variety of laboratory experiments in cellular and molecular biology. Performs cell survival, Fluorescence-activated Cell Sorting (FACS) analysis, ELIZA and molecular biology assays on cell cultures and animal tissues. Maintains mouse colonies, which includes animal husbandry, genotyping, and collecting organs and tissues.  Places lab orders and is responsible for lab organization, including freezer organization.  Performs data management and preparation of data for presentation in manuscripts, seminars, and other formats.  Supervises and provides assistance in training students (i.e. undergraduate and graduate levels). 


PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  PhD from an accredited college or university in Cell Biology or Biochemistry.  EXPERIENCE:  Up to one (0-1) year of lab experience in Cancer Biology, Signal Transduction, Cell Biology, or a related field.  At least one (1) year of experience handling and breeding mice.  Must possess peer-reviewed publications attesting to expertise.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of cell and molecular biology, cancer, and signal transduction.  Ability to write and communicate effectively.  Must be meticulous in data collection and organization. Ability to perform immunoblotting, genotyping, and basic molecular biology techniques.  Skills in cell and molecular biological techniques, such as cell culture, transfection, infection, molecular cloning, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)/ribonucleic acid (RNA)/protein isolation, real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), western blotting, and other cellular and molecular assays  according  to  examining  phenotypic  features  of  culturing  cell. Ability to use scientific equipment, including polymerase chain reaction (PCR) machines, cell culture hood, chemical hood, and high speed centrifuges.  Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must complete online forty (40) hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training within two (2) weeks from date of hire or may be subject to termination.  Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.  POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).  


SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience in animal models of Cancer, Cancer Biology, Immunology, or Signal Transduction. Previous research experience relating to signal transduction.
