POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER (WEARABLE MICROFLUIDICS) – ID# 221010.​ 

 

John A. Burns School of Medicine.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position withthe John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), Ray Research Group in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/Statelaws. 

 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,822/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Conducts research to develop novel sensing approaches to physiological signals found in sweat. Activities include developing, synthesizing, fabricating, and validating sensors against gold standard methods; circuit design; small device design; the additive manufacture of devices; and similar to support sensor development. Prepares, plans, performs and interprets results from experiments on sensor functions using chemistry, materials science, and engineering techniques related to point of care diagnostics. This includes performing electrochemical experiments, microfluidics fabrication/characterization, spectroscopy, etc. Collaborates with the Principal Investigator (PI), faculty colleagues, and graduate students on ongoing investigations in wearable sensors. Makes decisions for the project such as relevant topics of inquiry, and purchasing equipment and supplies. Solves problems, provides input and recommendations for solutions, and takes the lead in implementing those solutions. Performs data entry and analysis of experimental results using computer software. Collaborates with the PI to write/prepare manuscripts for publication in scholarly journals. Prepares grant applications for submission to funding agencies. Assists with training students, lab technicians, or graduate assistants in proper techniques. Assists with making presentations of project results to the scientific community and the public at scientific meetings. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  PhD from an accredited college or university in Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Bio/Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.  EXPERIENCE:  Up to one (0-1) year of experience in developing sensors with technical skills including electrochemistry, polymer chemistry, microfluidics, embedded systems, signal processing, and programming.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of biosignal analysis, biomedical instrumentation, programming (e.g., Matrix Laboratory (MATLAB), Mathematica, R, or Python), and technical skills. Knowledge of business computer software (Microsoft Office Suite, EndNote, etc.). Ability to perform procedures related to development and fabrication of sensors including microfluidics design, chemical analysis, device engineering, basic chemistry and engineering laboratory skills, and other technical skills relevant to the highly interdisciplinary work. Ability to work independently. Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, and have a strong publication record. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete the JABSOM Laboratory Safety training within twelve (12) months from date of hire. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Demonstrated knowledge of healthcare, wearable sensing, or additive manufacturing.
