An elementary reading tutor provides one-on-one tutoring or small group practice for students who need help learning to read or improving their reading skills. Your responsibilities in this job revolve around giving each student the literacy skills they need to develop into competent readers. You teach elementary school children between kindergarten and fourth or fifth grade. You may also provide instruction on vocabulary, writing, and reading. The reading tutor will be required to work with the refering classroom teacher to address student needs.
Requirements include a teaching license and bachelor’s degree in elementary education or special education.
An effective elementary reading tutor must be adept at speaking with and listening to students. Since students in need of reading tutoring are often struggling, compassion and patience are also vital traits for a tutor. You may need an understanding of or training in special needs education. Some reading students may suffer from learning disabilities such as dyslexia or speaking problems such as stuttering. Finally, a tutor must be able to engage students enthusiastically and make the process of learning to read fun.
